China Eastern Attendant Forced to Kneel After Passenger Incident
A China Eastern Airlines flight attendant was intimidated into repeated apologies on her knees following a minor food cart collision with a passenger on a 28 September 2026 Hefei–Dalian service.

In-Flight Incident on Hefei–Dalian Service
On the night of 28 September 2026, a China Eastern Airlines flight from Hefei to Dalian became the scene of a distressing incident involving a flight attendant and a passenger. During the service, a food cart accidentally made contact with a passenger's elbow while he was sleeping. Despite the absence of any apparent injury, the flight attendant immediately apologised.
The purser also provided an ice pack to the passenger. However, the passenger reportedly refused the apology, verbally abused the attendant, and threatened to 'kick' her, demanding she accompany him to a hospital after landing, according to information from a video shared on WeChat and reported by Sing Tao Daily.
Attendant's Repeated Apologies and Intervention
The passenger's aggressive demeanour reportedly intimidated the flight attendant, who was described as inexperienced. She knelt two or three times to offer apologies, as stated by a passenger named Zhang, who filmed the encounter. The tense situation was eventually defused when security officers intervened.
Upon the aircraft's arrival, medical personnel boarded to assess the passenger. They confirmed no surface wounds or swelling were present, and no further medical attention was required. The passenger subsequently declined the ground staff's offer to proceed to a hospital and departed the airport.
China Eastern's Response and Industry Standards
Later that day, China Eastern Airlines released a statement acknowledging the incident. The airline confirmed its employee was 'severely shaken' by the experience and had been provided with counselling. The attendant has since returned to her duties.
Industry professionals indicate that standard procedures for such incidents typically involve an immediate apology from the crew, with the purser stepping in if the situation escalates. Pursers have the authority to offer various forms of compensation, including seat upgrades, mileage points, vouchers, or monetary payments. Flight attendants involved in passenger complaints may also face reductions in their performance review scores.
Public Debate and Crew Welfare in Asia
The incident quickly became a trending topic on China's major social media platforms, Weibo and Sina, sparking significant public discussion. Many online users criticised the passenger's extreme reaction to a minor collision, advocating for greater respect towards service professionals.
This event underscores the pressures faced by cabin crew and the importance of providing comprehensive assistance and instruction for managing difficult passenger interactions.
This situation could prompt aviation authorities across Asia, such as the Civil Aviation Administration of China, to review existing protocols for managing disruptive passenger behaviour and supporting cabin crew by early 2027.
Such a review would aim to establish clearer boundaries for passenger conduct and ensure crew members receive sufficient protection and assistance when facing aggressive incidents.
