Heathrow Tops Global Airport Assessment
London Heathrow Airport (LHR) has secured the leading position in Air Advisor's 2026 Global Airport Rankings. The independent travel research firm assessed 23 of the world's most frequently used airports. Dublin Airport (DUB) placed second, with Tenerife South Airport (TFS) following in third.
This assessment highlights operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction as key performance indicators. European airports collectively claimed eight of the top ten spots in the comprehensive evaluation. Air Advisor’s methodology weighted punctuality and Google reviews heavily. Ranking Methodology Emphasises Core Functions
Air Advisor’s ranking process involved extensive research into travel patterns and preferences. The firm selected airports based on their usage by British and North American passengers. Punctuality, defined as the percentage of flights departing on time, received a 40% weighting. The average Google review score, out of five stars, also contributed 40% to the total score.
The remaining 20% was distributed across four other categories. These included transport cost to the nearest city (8%), average Google review for airport shops (5%), average transfer distance (4%), and Skytrax's five-star rating (3%). This approach focuses on an airport's fundamental purpose: moving passengers efficiently.
Heathrow's Performance Driven by Punctuality
London Heathrow's top ranking largely stems from its operational efficiency. The airport handled 84.5 million passengers in 2025. It achieved a 79.14% punctuality rate during that period. This rate surpasses the 74.04% average across all 23 ranked airports.
Although Heathrow held the third-best punctuality score overall, its strong performance in other weighted categories secured its leading position. For example, Los Angeles International (LAX) had better punctuality but performed poorly in minor categories. Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport (BOD) also showed high punctuality but received low Google reviews. Heathrow’s ability to manage high passenger volumes with consistent on-time departures proved decisive.
Significant Shifts in Airport Performance
The 2026 rankings reveal notable changes compared to previous assessments by Air Advisor. Athens International Airport (ATH), the 2023 winner, dropped to ninth place. This decline was attributed to a significant reduction in its punctuality score. Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) also saw a substantial drop, falling nine places.
Conversely, Tenerife South Airport climbed seven places, demonstrating improved performance. Dublin Airport rose six places in the rankings. Airports like Manchester Airport (MAN) and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) finished at the bottom. Both received low scores for punctuality and Google reviews, indicating areas for improvement.
