Cyprus Migration Department Opens Digital Nomad Visa Applications
Non-EU/EEA nationals earning at least €3,500 net monthly for foreign entities can now apply for a permit, with a scheme cap of 500 applicants.

New Visa Route for Remote Workers
The Cyprus Migration Department confirmed on 9 September 2026 that it is now accepting applications for its Digital Nomad Visa programme. This initiative targets professionals from countries outside the European Union and European Economic Area who perform their work remotely for employers or clients based abroad.
To qualify, applicants must demonstrate a minimum stable net income of €3,500 per month, after taxes and social security contributions. This threshold increases if family members are included in the application.
The scheme has an initial quota of 500 permits, aiming to attract skilled individuals who contribute to the Cypriot economy without competing with the local labour market. The programme specifically excludes employment by Cypriot entities or services rendered to clients established within Cyprus.
Application Procedure and Permit Conditions
Prospective digital nomads must submit their complete application to the central Migration Department office in Nicosia within three months of their arrival in Cyprus. Alternatively, individuals already residing lawfully in Cyprus may be eligible to change their immigration status, provided current regulations permit it.
Required documentation includes proof of remote employment or service contracts, income verification, and confirmed accommodation details, all needing official translation and certification for foreign-issued papers. Biometric data and a signature are collected for the residence card.
The initial permit is valid for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a maximum additional period of two years. The Migration Department estimates an examination period of five to seven weeks for a fully submitted file. As of 9 September 2026, the cost for issuing or renewing a permit is €70, with an additional €70 fee for initial registration in the Aliens Register.
Family Provisions and Tax Considerations
Under the Digital Nomad Visa scheme, eligible family members of the main applicant may also obtain residence permits for the same duration. However, it is crucial to note that these dependants are not permitted to work or engage in any economic activity within Cyprus based on their dependent status.
Applicants are advised to be aware of the potential tax implications of prolonged residence; staying in Cyprus for more than 183 days can trigger tax residency obligations.
The Migration Department clarifies that the immigration permit itself does not automatically determine tax status, which depends on a comprehensive assessment of individual circumstances and the country's tax regulations. Renewal applications must be filed at least one month before the current permit expires, accompanied by updated evidence of eligibility.
Opportunities for Asian Remote Workers
This new visa category from Cyprus presents a tangible opportunity for remote professionals across Asia seeking a European base with a favourable climate and strategic location. With an increasing number of Asian workers embracing remote employment models, schemes like Cyprus's offer a clear pathway for extended stays.
While no specific statistics yet track Asian uptake of this particular visa, the trend of digital nomad programmes gaining traction in Europe could inspire similar initiatives in Asian destinations looking to attract skilled foreign talent.
Asian remote workers considering this option should meticulously prepare all required documentation, including income proof and health insurance, and seek independent advice on tax residency rules, given the potential for dual tax obligations after 183 days of residence.
