Singapore Airlines Secures Next-Generation Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Singapore Airlines has committed to procuring up to 4,800 tonnes of advanced sustainable aviation fuel from Aether Fuels' new Project Beacon facility in Singapore, with deliveries set to begin in 2028.

Singapore Airlines Commits to New SAF Pathway
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has entered into a binding agreement to purchase next-generation sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Aether Fuels. The accord, signed on 23 October 2026, stipulates that SIA will receive up to 4,800 tonnes of SAF over a three-year period, with the first deliveries scheduled for 2028.
This procurement marks a significant step for SIA, as it becomes the inaugural airline customer for Project Beacon, Aether's newly established commercial production facility located in Singapore. The agreement is SIA’s first purchase of SAF produced using innovative technology that converts waste carbon feedstocks into aviation fuel.
Project Beacon to Utilise Waste Carbon Feedstock
Project Beacon, Aether Fuels' production site, is under development at Aster's refining complex on Pulau Bukom in Singapore. The facility will produce SAF using Aether’s proprietary Aether Aurora technology, which processes waste carbon feedstocks.
These include biomethane and various industrial waste gases, offering an alternative to the more constrained lipid-based feedstocks typically used in hydro-processed esters and fatty acids (HEFA) pathways.
Aether's technology innovates around the Fischer-Tropsch process to convert these waste-derived gases into liquid aviation fuel, with the resulting SAF certified under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).
Supporting Singapore's Green Aviation Ambitions
The agreement between Singapore Airlines and Aether Fuels supports Singapore’s broader efforts to develop new lower-carbon fuel production capabilities within the nation. By demonstrating a clear demand for these innovative fuel pathways, SIA helps to solidify the commercial conditions necessary for scaling up new SAF technologies in the region.
Aether Fuels has also outlined plans for future expansion, intending to launch its first large-scale commercial plant by 2031. This future facility is projected to have a production capacity at least ten times greater than that of Project Beacon, further enhancing the supply of next-generation SAF.
Implications for Asia's Sustainable Air Travel
This strategic procurement by Singapore Airlines is integral to its stated ambition of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. For the Asian travel industry, the move shows a tangible commitment from a leading regional carrier towards decarbonisation.
It could encourage other airlines and fuel producers across Asia to explore and invest in similar non-traditional SAF production methods, moving beyond current lipid-based options.
As more SAF becomes available and integrated into operations from 2028, travellers on Singapore Airlines can expect their flights to contribute to a reduced carbon footprint, supporting the transition to more environmentally conscious air travel across the continent.
