JetBlue Secures Spirit Airlines' LaGuardia Slots for $58.5 Million
JetBlue has acquired 22 daily flight slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport from the defunct Spirit Airlines for $58.5 million, outbidding Frontier Airlines. This move follows Spirit's cessation of flights in May 2026.

LaGuardia Slot Acquisition Confirmed
JetBlue has successfully purchased Spirit Airlines' former flight slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport, agreeing to pay $58.5 million for the package. The acquisition includes 12 daily departure slots and 10 daily arrival slots. Reuters reported JetBlue's successful bid on Monday, 20 July 2026, citing court documents related to Spirit's bankruptcy proceedings, according to AirlineGeeks. This transaction marks a significant expansion for JetBlue at one of the United States' highly demanded, slot-controlled airports.
Context of Spirit Airlines' Collapse
The flight slots became available following Spirit Airlines' operational shutdown and immediate cessation of all flights on 2 May 2026. A small team of Spirit employees is currently overseeing the liquidation of the airline's assets, which includes airport gates and these valuable slots. JetBlue's bid surpassed a rival offer of $57.5 million from Frontier Airlines. Spirit Airlines previously connected LaGuardia to several key destinations, including Dallas/Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Detroit, Houston, and Fort Lauderdale.
Implications for LaGuardia Operations
Spirit Airlines will seek final court approval for the sale during a bankruptcy hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 22 July 2026, in New York. This purchase will substantially increase JetBlue's presence at LaGuardia, where it currently operates 31 slots. The additional slots will allow JetBlue to expand its service offerings from the airport, potentially leading to new routes or increased frequencies on existing services. This development provides clarity on the future utilisation of Spirit's former operational capacity at LaGuardia.
