Nha Trang Authorities Impose Fines

Nha Trang authorities initiated unannounced inspections of food establishments on 19 October 2026, leading to fines for several popular restaurants in the central Vietnamese beach town. Officials from Nha Trang Ward in Khanh Hoa Province reported discovering 22 breaches of hygiene and safety regulations during these checks.

The targeted establishments primarily cater to tourists visiting the coastal destination. This enforcement action aims to uphold food safety standards within the popular travel hub.

Specific Violations Detailed

Among the businesses penalised was Tam Meo seafood on Tran Phu Street, which received a VND2 million (US$77.3) fine after inspectors found pests in its food preparation area.

The Local 2, also on Tran Phu Street, faced a VND10 million penalty for risks of cross-contamination between raw and cooked ingredients and for failing to follow mandated three-step food inspection protocols. Dang Van Quyen Ninh Hoa grilled pork roll eatery on Lan Ong Street was fined VND2 million for staff not wearing protective gear during food preparation.

Ha chicken rice on Ngo Gia Tu Street incurred a VND4 million fine for not retaining required food samples. Nguyen Loan Eatery, known for its fish noodle soup, was fined VND12.5 million for operating without a valid food safety certificate.

Furthermore, several businesses situated in the Tri Nguyen island area were penalised for operating without the specific food safety certificates required for water-based facilities.

Cumulative Fines and Enforcement Challenges

The recent fines contribute to a cumulative total of VND169 million in penalties issued to Nha Trang restaurants for various safety violations during the first nine months of the current year. Local officials indicate that enforcement efforts face significant obstacles.

There is a noted scarcity of food safety enforcement personnel relative to the large number of businesses requiring monitoring. This imbalance poses a challenge for effective oversight, prevention, and response to food safety incidents across the city's extensive culinary sector.

Supply Chain Hurdles and Traveller Impact

Further complicating food safety control, local officials highlighted difficulties in tracing the origin of meat supplies. The primary source for many establishments is traditional wet markets, involving multiple intermediaries.

After butchering and portioning, veterinary inspection stamps on carcasses are often no longer intact, hindering efforts to verify origins and ensure product quality. For travellers to Nha Trang, these enforcement actions signal a focused effort by local authorities to ensure dining safety.

Visitors should note that such inspections are ongoing, and a restaurant's compliance with hygiene standards remains a critical factor when choosing where to dine in the city.
