United Expands Premium Lounge Offerings at Newark

United Airlines has substantially enhanced its passenger lounge facilities at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), introducing three revamped United Club locations. These spaces, most of which have seen upgrades over the last four years, aim to provide a blend of comfort and design-forward amenities for travellers.

With United operating nearly 70% of flights from EWR, these developments cater to a significant portion of the airport's traffic. Each lounge operates daily from 05:00 to 22:00, with the United Club near Gate C123 extending its hours until 22:30, according to information from United Airlines.

Gate C123 Club Features Art and Spa Suites

The transformation began with the United Club near Gate C123 in Terminal C, which opened in May 2022. This 30,000 square-foot facility accommodates 480 seats and was designed to move beyond utilitarian functions, incorporating boutique hotel-style decor inspired by New York City and New Jersey culture.

The lounge features a full-service coffee bar, a premium bar, a wellness room, and spa-like shower suites. United collaborated with The Newark Museum of Art and Gallery Aferro to showcase murals by local artists, including Gilbert Hsiao and Dahlia Elsayed, reflecting the region's heritage. Dining options include a salad bar and entrees served in cast-iron skillets.

New Clubs in Terminal C and A Offer Varied Ambience

Further expanding its offerings, United introduced a second club in Terminal C near Gate C74 in October 2023. This 18,000 square-foot lounge, seating over 400 passengers, draws design inspiration from midtown Manhattan, featuring ceiling art reminiscent of Grand Central Station.

It includes a self-scan entrance, a bar, and a wellness room, alongside a buffet with various snack and meal options. Meanwhile, the United Club near Gate A27 debuted with the new Terminal A in January 2023. Terminal A itself received Skytrak’s World’s Best New Terminal award in 2024.

This 15,000 square-foot lounge, with approximately 300 seats, offers an open-air, loft-like feel, aligning with the terminal's high-tech aesthetic. It provides a buffet, bar, wellness room, and locally sourced art, including a mixed-media mural by Newark artist Antoinnette Ellis-Williams.

Enhancing Long-Haul Travel from Asia

For Asian travellers connecting through Newark Liberty International Airport, these upgraded United Club facilities represent an improved pre-flight comfort experience, particularly for long-haul journeys.

As a significant hub for international travel, EWR serves numerous routes that connect to or from Asia, making enhanced amenities relevant for passengers on extended itineraries.

While no direct Asian airline or specific route is detailed in these lounge upgrades, the investment by a major US carrier in premium ground services at a global gateway airport reflects a broader industry trend towards improving passenger comfort.

This development benefits all international travellers, including those from key Asian markets, and could influence similar service enhancements at Asian airports seeking to attract or retain long-haul transit traffic.
