TSA Clarifies Hammock Policy for Air Travellers, Usage Remains Unclear
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has confirmed that hammocks are permissible through airport security checkpoints. However, the agency advises travellers to verify usage policies directly with individual airports, as hanging such equipment in terminals often contravenes local regulations and presents safety concerns.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced on July 22, 2026, that passengers are permitted to bring hammocks through airport security. This clarification, issued on what the agency identified as "National Hammock Day," follows instances of travellers attempting to create makeshift sleeping arrangements within airport terminals. The news, reported by View from the Wing, highlights a growing trend where passengers seek comfort during prolonged delays, sometimes resorting to unconventional items like hammocks or even mattresses. This practice has been observed at various locations, including Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in October 2022 and Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport.
Airport Usage Restrictions and Safety Concerns
Despite the TSA's allowance for carrying hammocks, their actual deployment within airport facilities presents significant challenges. Airports frequently have specific rules prohibiting sleeping or lying down in public areas, as exemplified by regulations at Newark Liberty International Airport. Furthermore, the structural integrity of airport infrastructure is a concern; columns are not engineered to support the substantial loads generated by hammocks. A 200-pound person suspended at a 15-degree angle, for instance, creates a load of approximately 386 pounds. Such setups could also obstruct emergency egress routes, accessible pathways, passenger queues, and maintenance operations.
Implications for Travellers
For air travellers, this means that while a hammock may pass through security, finding an authorised and safe location to use it within an airport terminal is highly improbable. The TSA itself suggests checking with airport management, a task often impractical given the lack of readily available staff for such inquiries in public areas. Consequently, passengers bringing hammocks should anticipate being unable to use them, risking conflict with airport authorities, or having their items deemed an obstruction. The onus remains on individual airports to enforce their specific policies regarding passenger conduct and terminal usage.
