United MileagePlus Shifts Value to Co-Branded Cardholders, Business Card Offer Extended
United Airlines has restructured its MileagePlus loyalty programme, making co-branded credit cards increasingly essential for members to accrue and redeem miles effectively. The United SM Business Card, with an extended bonus offer of up to 110,000 miles, is highlighted as a key option for travellers.

MileagePlus Programme Restructuring Favours Cardholders
United Airlines has significantly altered its MileagePlus loyalty programme, making participation via a co-branded credit card critical for members to maximise benefits, according to a July 23, 2026 report from View from the Wing. The airline has reduced mileage earning rates for those without a card by 2 miles per dollar, while simultaneously increasing rates for cardholders by 1 mile per dollar across all Premier status tiers. For instance, a general member now earns 3 miles per dollar without a card, compared to 6 miles per dollar with one. Additionally, general members without a card no longer earn miles on basic economy fares, a benefit retained by cardholders.
Enhanced Redemption and Award Availability for Cardholders
Cardholders also benefit from reduced mileage requirements for United flight awards, with primary cardholders receiving at least a 10% discount on redemptions, and elite members with a card securing at least 15% off. This means a United Economy award priced at 15,000 miles would cost 13,500 miles for a primary cardholder. Furthermore, United is promoting increased availability of Saver Award seats in United Polaris business class for cardholders. View from the Wing identifies the United SM Business Card, with a £150 annual fee, as a particularly attractive option due to its extended offer allowing earning up to 110,000 bonus miles.
United SM Business Card Offer Details
The extended offer for the United SM Business Card includes 100,000 bonus miles and 2,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP) after spending £5,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening. An additional 10,000 bonus miles are available upon adding an employee card within the same initial three-month period. Cardholders also receive a £125 United travel credit annually after making five United flight purchases of £100 or more each calendar year. United further incentivises holding both a business and a personal United credit card by awarding a 5,000-mile “better together” bonus each anniversary.
Implications for Travellers and Industry
These changes demonstrate United’s strategy to deepen loyalty through its co-branded credit card portfolio, making it increasingly difficult for non-cardholders to derive significant value from the MileagePlus programme. For frequent travellers and small business owners who regularly fly with United, acquiring a co-branded card, such as the United SM Business Card, has become a practical necessity to access competitive mileage earning rates, lower award costs, and preferential award seat availability. Industry observers will monitor if other airlines follow similar strategies to tie loyalty programme benefits more closely to financial product holdings.
