Air Astana Adds Direct Astana–Bangkok Flights
Kazakhstan's flag carrier will launch twice-weekly services to the Thai capital from December 11, 2026, using Airbus A321LR aircraft, as part of an expansion that also includes a new route to Langkawi, Malaysia.

New Capital-to-Capital Link for Air Astana
Kazakhstan's national airline, Air Astana, will introduce direct flights between Astana and Bangkok starting December 11, 2026. This new route will operate twice weekly, utilising Airbus A321LR aircraft, according to an announcement by Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Transport on September 30, 2026.
Establishing a direct air corridor between the capital cities of Kazakhstan and Thailand, this service aims to foster increased tourism and business travel, thereby strengthening bilateral ties. The Ministry highlighted the importance of this connection in expanding opportunities for both leisure and professional journeys between the two nations.
Expanding Kazakhstan–Thailand Air Connectivity
The introduction of the Astana–Bangkok route will significantly boost air connectivity, bringing the total number of flights between Kazakhstan and Thailand to 20 per week across four distinct routes. Prior to this new service, Air Astana maintained 7 weekly flights on the Almaty–Phuket route and 6 weekly flights connecting Almaty and Bangkok.
Complementing these are services from other carriers: Thai AirAsia X offers 3 weekly flights on the Almaty–Bangkok corridor, and SCAT Airlines operates 2 weekly services from Shymkent to Bangkok. This expansion by Air Astana demonstrates a clear trend towards enhanced air travel options between Central Asia and Southeast Asia.
Seasonal Service to Langkawi, Malaysia
Further expanding its Southeast Asian network, Air Astana separately announced on September 29, 2026, its plans to launch direct seasonal flights from Almaty to Langkawi, Malaysia. These services are scheduled to commence on December 25, 2026, and will operate three times a week.
The airline intends to deploy Airbus A321neo aircraft for this new Malaysian route, catering to seasonal demand. This addition diversifies Air Astana's offerings, providing another direct option for Kazakhstani travellers seeking popular leisure destinations in the region during the winter period.
Implications for Asian Connectivity and Tourism
These new Air Astana routes represent a notable expansion of air links between Central Asia and Southeast Asia, offering direct benefits for travellers and the regional aviation industry. The direct Astana–Bangkok connection provides a crucial, more convenient travel option for passengers from Kazakhstan's capital, potentially stimulating inbound tourism to Thailand.
Similarly, the Almaty–Langkawi service opens a new direct avenue for holidaymakers from Kazakhstan to Malaysia. For the Asian travel industry, these developments show the growing outbound travel market from Central Asian countries, suggesting opportunities for other airlines and tour operators to develop services or packages catering to this evolving demand.
