New China Gateway from Vancouver

Air Canada will launch new nonstop services from Vancouver International Airport (YVR) to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), China, starting May 2027. This year-round route will operate three times weekly, employing a Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

Flights from Vancouver are scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with return services from Guangzhou on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. The addition of Guangzhou establishes Air Canada's third entry point into mainland China, complementing existing services to Shanghai and Beijing.

This expansion reflects Air Canada's strategic focus on high-yield trans-Pacific demand and strengthening its West Coast hub. The airline will become the sole North American carrier serving Guangzhou.

Japan Expansion and West Coast Hub

Air Canada will also introduce a thrice-weekly service to New Chitose Airport (CTS) in Sapporo, Japan, starting December 2026. This seasonal route targets the popular winter ski and snowboarding period in Japan's Hokkaido region.

The new Sapporo flights further strengthen Air Canada's presence in Japan, which already includes daily services to Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT) and four weekly flights to Osaka Kansai International Airport (KIX). These additions bolster Air Canada's extensive Asia and Oceania network from its Vancouver hub.

Data from aviation analytics company Cirium shows that in September 2026, Air Canada operated close to 60 weekly long-haul flights from Vancouver to destinations across Asia and Oceania.

Trans-Pacific Network and Market Leadership

Air Canada stands as the largest international operator of trans-Pacific flights from Vancouver, leveraging its widebody fleet for these services. China represents the airline's most significant market within the region.

With the new Guangzhou route, Air Canada's weekly flight count to mainland China will reach 17, including daily services to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Beijing Capital Airport (PEK). Beyond China and Japan, Air Canada serves other key Asia-Pacific destinations from Vancouver.

These include daily flights to Seoul Incheon (ICN), six weekly services to Hong Kong (HKG), three weekly flights to Bangkok, and six weekly flights to Brisbane. Manila (MNL) and Singapore (SIN) each see two weekly rotations, with Sydney also served seven times weekly via Toronto.

Implications for Travellers and Industry

This expansion by Air Canada provides increased direct connectivity between Canada's West Coast and critical Asian markets for both business and leisure travellers. The new Guangzhou route offers North American passengers a direct link to a major economic and cultural centre in southern China, potentially streamlining travel for those previously needing connections.

Similarly, the Sapporo service directly facilitates access for winter sports enthusiasts heading to Japan's Hokkaido region during the peak season. Air Canada's position as the sole North American carrier on the Guangzhou route may reshape competitive dynamics for trans-Pacific traffic.

This strategic network growth solidifies Vancouver International Airport's standing as a vital gateway for travel across the Pacific. Industry stakeholders will observe the impact on passenger volumes and overall market competition.
