Air Canada Unveils Direct Vancouver Sapporo Winter Service
The new three-times-weekly route, operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliners, commences on 17 December 2026, boosting Hokkaido's international access.

Air Canada's Direct Sapporo Connection
Air Canada is set to launch a new non-stop flight connecting Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with Sapporo's New Chitose Airport (CTS) from 17 December 2026. The airline will operate the service three times weekly until late March 2027, utilising Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Flights from Vancouver (AC55) will depart on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with a scheduled duration of approximately nine hours and ten minutes. Return flights from Sapporo (AC54) will operate on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, taking about eight hours and fifteen minutes.
Air Canada noted that this direct link will save passengers over two hours compared to itineraries involving a connection in Tokyo. The carrier initially scheduled the 255-seat Boeing 787-8 but later increased capacity by deploying the larger 298-seat Boeing 787-9 from launch, reverting to the -8 between 18 January and 27 February 2027.
North American Airlines Expand Hokkaido Access
Air Canada's new service is part of a broader expansion of direct North American flights to Sapporo for the upcoming winter season. United Airlines will also introduce a non-stop route from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Sapporo, commencing six days earlier on 11 December 2026.
This United Airlines service will also operate three times weekly using Boeing 787-9 aircraft, continuing through March 2027. The combined launches from Air Canada and United Airlines will significantly enhance Hokkaido's connectivity, providing six weekly non-stop flights from North America this winter, a considerable increase from no direct services previously. This development shows growing interest in Japan's northern regions among North American travellers.
Asian Carriers Boost Winter Capacity to Sapporo
Beyond North America, several Asian airlines are also expanding their winter schedules to Sapporo, indicating strong regional demand for Hokkaido. Qantas is increasing its Sydney–Sapporo flights from three to five times weekly, citing robust performance and exceptional demand from the previous ski season.
Singapore Airlines will expand its seasonal operation on the Singapore–Sapporo route to daily flights from 30 November 2026 through 27 January 2027, before continuing with three weekly services through February 2027.
Philippine Airlines is increasing its Manila–Sapporo frequency from three to five weekly services, while Cebu Pacific will operate daily flights on the same route between December 2026 and February 2027. Furthermore, Eastar Jet will offer 24 weekly flights between Seoul and Sapporo, up from 21.
Hokkaido's Growing Appeal for Winter Travel
The collective increase in air capacity from both North American and Asian carriers underscores Hokkaido's rising prominence as a winter leisure destination. Mark Galardo, Air Canada's Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted Sapporo's appeal for snow enthusiasts, cultural visitors, and culinary connoisseurs.
The expansion of direct flights simplifies access to Japan's northern prefecture, reinforcing Vancouver's role as a key Pacific gateway for North America.
For Asian travellers and airlines, this surge in services to Sapporo for the 2026–27 winter season reveals a competitive market, potentially leading to increased options and more accessible fares for those planning winter holidays focused on skiing, local cuisine, and the Sapporo Snow Festival.
