AirAsia, Hong Kong Airlines Expand Networks; Air India Boosts Connectivity
AirAsia and Pegasus Airlines have launched a codeshare agreement, connecting Southeast Asia with Europe. Hong Kong Airlines commenced direct flights to Urumqi, while Air India introduced new domestic ‘Easy Connect’ services and a loyalty partnership with IHG Hotels & Resorts. Air India Express also unveiled new staff uniforms.

AirAsia and Pegasus Forge Europe-Asia Link
AirAsia has initiated its first codeshare collaboration with Pegasus Airlines, Türkiye’s largest low-cost carrier. This partnership establishes seamless travel between Southeast Asia and Europe, utilising Istanbul as a key transit point.
The agreement connects AirAsia’s extensive network across ASEAN and Asia with Pegasus’ broad European routes, operating through Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen. AirAsia X will increase its Kuala Lumpur-Istanbul frequency from four to seven times weekly by February 2027. This expansion aims to provide travellers with greater flexibility and improved connectivity between the two regions. AirAsia X has operated the direct Kuala Lumpur-Istanbul route since November 2025.
Hong Kong Airlines Inaugurates Urumqi Service
Hong Kong Airlines began its direct service between Hong Kong and Urumqi on 29 August. This twice-weekly route uses an Airbus A330 widebody aircraft. The new connection strengthens links between Hong Kong and Northwest China. Hong Kong Airlines stated this initiative supports the nation’s policy of expanding the Individual Visit Scheme.
It aims to attract more visitors from Xinjiang and Northwest China to Hong Kong. Travellers can also connect through Hong Kong to destinations in Southeast Asia, Australia, and North America. Furthermore, the Urumqi route offers connections to Central Asia, aligning with Hong Kong’s government policy for regional cooperation.
Air India Enhances Domestic and Loyalty Offerings
Air India has launched ‘Easy Connect’ services from Ahmedabad, expanding its hub-and-spoke initiative. Ahmedabad joins Amritsar and Varanasi in providing seamless international connectivity for travellers across Gujarat. This supports India’s ambition to become a leading global aviation hub.
Air India designated two daily flights from Ahmedabad to Delhi as ‘Easy Connect’ services. Flight AI1121 departs Ahmedabad at 8:15 PM, arriving in Delhi at 10:00 PM, commencing 1 September. Flight AI1117 departs Ahmedabad at 8:25 AM, arriving in Delhi at 10:15 AM, commencing 2 September. Air India also partnered with IHG Hotels & Resorts.
Maharaja Club members will earn Maharaja Points during stays at IHG properties worldwide. Members receive two Maharaja Points for every US$1 spent at most IHG Hotels. Air India Express Unveils New Uniforms
Air India Express introduced new uniforms for its cabin crew and frontline staff across its network. The uniforms, launched from 1 September, apply to cabin crew, airport services, aviation security, and flight operations teams. This change reflects the airline’s evolving identity and its ongoing transformation of the guest experience.
The refreshed uniforms extend the airline’s ‘Tales of India’ initiative. This programme features distinctive aircraft tail art inspired by India’s indigenous art forms and cultural heritage. The uniform designs draw from Tamil Nadu’s Kanjeevaram, Himachal Pradesh’s Pattu, Gujarat’s Patola, Assam’s Gamosa, and Madhya Pradesh’s Bagh.
Contemporary silhouettes, inspired by the traditional kurti, are complemented by tailored jackets, scarves, and pocket squares. These elements combine Indian sensibilities with modern design.
Outlook: Greater Connectivity and Passenger Benefits
These developments promise increased travel options and improved connectivity for global passengers. The AirAsia and Pegasus codeshare expands access between Europe and Southeast Asia, potentially boosting tourism and business travel. Hong Kong Airlines’ new Urumqi route strengthens regional links and provides new avenues for travellers connecting through Hong Kong.
Air India’s ‘Easy Connect’ services will simplify domestic-to-international transfers for Indian travellers, enhancing the country's aviation hub aspirations. The IHG partnership offers tangible loyalty benefits for frequent flyers and hotel guests.
These initiatives collectively demonstrate a continued focus on network expansion and passenger service enhancements across Asian carriers.
