On Saturday, August 29, two specially branded Airlink Embraer E-Jets conducted a low-altitude flyover of the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa. The manoeuvre occurred just before the kick-off of a rugby match between the South African Springboks and the New Zealand All Blacks, forming part of the new 'Rugby's Greatest Rivalry' tour.

The flyover was broadcast live on national television and subsequently circulated widely online. Viewers expressed concern regarding the perceived low altitude of the aircraft, with some footage appearing to show one jet in close proximity to the stadium's structure.

This public reaction led to widespread discussion across social media platforms regarding aviation safety protocols for such public displays.

Historical Context and Public Perception

Low-altitude flyovers at major sporting events are a long-standing tradition in South Africa, dating back to 1995 when a South African Airways Boeing 747 flew over Ellis Park Stadium for the Rugby World Cup final. This tradition has continued through various events, including displays for the Qatar Airways Cup.

Despite this history, the recent Airlink flyover generated considerable public scrutiny. Many online observers were taken aback by the apparent closeness of the aircraft to the stadium roof, particularly as one jet appeared to pitch upwards, making its tail seem even lower.

However, camera angles can distort perception, and footage from alternative viewpoints suggested a more substantial clearance between the aircraft and the stadium structure.

Flight Data Clarifies Altitude

Detailed flight data supplied by Flight Radar 24 offers clarification on the actual altitude of the aircraft during the flyover. One of the Embraer E190 regional jets, registered as ZS-YDE, departed Cape Town International Airport (CPT) around 2 pm on August 29. It maintained a holding pattern over Robben Island before executing the flypast.

Flight Radar 24 data indicates that ZS-YDE maintained a barometric altitude of 50 metres (approximately 164 feet) as it passed over the DHL Stadium, with a GPS altitude of 925 feet.

Given that the DHL Stadium itself has a reported height of 164 feet, the actual vertical clearance between the aircraft and the stadium roof was likely greater than suggested by some of the widely circulated video recordings.

Airlink's Role in Rugby's Greatest Rivalry

Airlink was announced as the official airline for 'Rugby's Greatest Rivalry' in June. This partnership extends beyond ceremonial flyovers; Airlink is also the exclusive carrier responsible for transporting the participating rugby squads, coaches, management, and support staff across South Africa for the duration of the tour.

The two Embraer E190 regional jets involved in Saturday's flyover, registered as ZS-YAE and ZS-YDE, were specially adorned in an all-green livery to mark this sponsorship.

The airline's prominent role in such a high-profile sporting event demonstrates a strategic marketing approach, leveraging national interest in rugby to enhance brand visibility and association with major cultural events, while also navigating public perceptions of aviation displays.
