Haneda's Domestic Terminal Expands Capacity

Tokyo International Airport, commonly known as Haneda, inaugurates its new Terminal 1 North Satellite on 1 September 2026. This development represents the first significant expansion for Terminal 1 since its original opening in September 1993, 33 years prior. The extension, attached to the north side of Terminal 1, features a distinctive hybrid design.

Its lower section employs a conventional steel frame, while the upper floor, which serves as the primary passenger thoroughfare, incorporates wood from Japanese cedar, oak, and larch trees. Haneda Airport states this construction choice creates a well-lit and welcoming environment, replicating the fragrances of a Japanese forest within the concourse. This expansion aims to enhance the capacity and passenger flow for domestic routes operating from Terminal 1.

New Facilities and Passenger Amenities

The North Satellite introduces six fixed boarding bridges, removing the requirement for bus transfers between the terminal building and aircraft. These bridges also feature a similar wood aesthetic found elsewhere in the new concourse.

Further amenities include the Forest Lounge, a combined cafe and lounge facility accessible to patrons holding affiliated credit cards, such as UV Mastercard and UC Visa. Non-cardholders may purchase beverages and dessert items for takeaway. For travellers with young children seeking an active space rather than quiet rest, the North Satellite provides a children's play area.

Some of its equipment is constructed from recycled plastic drink bottle caps gathered at the airport, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.

Enhanced Mobility and Accessibility

Access to the North Satellite's gates requires a longer walk compared to other areas of Terminal 1, as the extension operates without a dedicated street entrance. Japan Airlines estimates an approximately 15-minute walk from Terminal 1’s security checkpoints to the furthest point of the new expansion.

To accelerate transit, the facility incorporates moving walkways and a new 'iino' autonomous mobility device model. This device accommodates four people and operates free of charge from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily. The iino device also incorporates a wood-effect finish, aligning with the terminal's design theme. The first commercial flights from the Terminal 1 North Satellite are scheduled for 1 September 2026.

Implications for Domestic Travel in Japan

As Terminal 1 exclusively handles domestic routes, international travellers will not use this new satellite for flights into or out of Japan. However, the expansion holds relevance for those planning internal travel within the country.

With the discontinuation of many past Japanese rail pass promotions and increasing congestion at several bullet train-accessible sightseeing locations, alternative modes of country-wide transport are gaining prominence. Domestic air routes, now bolstered by Haneda’s expanded capacity, present a viable option for accessing less-frequented regions.

Travellers may also have the opportunity to fly on specific themed aircraft, such as the Pokémon Jet Red. It is important for all domestic passengers to adhere to Haneda’s revised luggage regulations by checking in sufficiently in advance of departure.
