United Airlines Adds SFO-Okinawa, Boosts Asia
United Airlines will launch a new non-stop service from San Francisco to Okinawa in March 2027, becoming the sole US carrier on the route. The airline is also boosting frequencies across its existing 10 Eastern Asia routes from San Francisco for summer 2027 and introduced a seasonal winter service to Sapporo this December.
New Okinawa Service Launches March 2027
United Airlines will introduce a new non-stop flight from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) to Okinawa (Naha Airport) starting Saturday, March 27, 2027. This new connection will operate three times weekly, on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. United will deploy a Boeing 777-200ER twinjet for this transpacific service.
According to AeroRoutes, flight UA833 will depart SFO at 10:35 AM, arriving in Okinawa at 3:50 PM the following day. The return flight, UA834, will leave Okinawa at 5:50 PM, reaching SFO at 12:50 PM local time on the same day after a two-hour turnaround.
This marks Okinawa as United's sixth Japanese destination and establishes the carrier as the sole US airline to fly non-stop to the city.
Broader Summer 2027 Asia Network from SFO
In addition to Okinawa, United Airlines plans to operate 11 non-stop transpacific routes to cities in Eastern Asia from its San Francisco hub during summer 2027. Aviation analytics firm Cirium reports that several key Asian destinations will see twice-daily flights from SFO. These include Hong Kong, Manila, Seoul Incheon, Singapore Changi, and Taipei.
Five further destinations will receive daily service from San Francisco: Beijing Capital, Shanghai Pudong, Osaka Kansai, Tokyo Haneda, and Tokyo Narita. Travellers flying to Tokyo Narita will also have the option to connect to Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) in Taiwan, though this involves an aircraft change at Narita.
The Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) route is notable for being the corridor where United Airlines introduced its premium-heavy 'Elevated' layout on select Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner twinjets earlier this year, featuring 222 seats: 64 in business, 35 in premium economy, and 123 in economy.
Seasonal Winter Service to Sapporo
Beyond its summer 2027 schedule, United Airlines had previously announced a new seasonal winter route from San Francisco to Sapporo's New Chitose Airport (CTS). This service, revealed in May this year, is set to commence on December 11 this year and will run three times a week.
The route is specifically designed to cater to winter sports enthusiasts, providing access to Japan's ski regions. United is considering using a Boeing 787 for this service, which will not appear in the airline's 2027 summer schedule due to its seasonal nature.
The airline highlights that passengers can connect to this Sapporo service from 80 US cities via San Francisco International Airport.
Strategic Growth and Traveller Impact
United's expansion of its Asia-Pacific network from San Francisco underscores its strategic focus on global reach. Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning & Alliances, stated the carrier has added flights to nearly 60 new international cities in the last decade, building a network designed to set travel trends.
For travellers, these new and increased services mean more direct access to key Asian business and leisure centres, potentially increasing competition and choice. The introduction of the Okinawa route as the sole non-stop US carrier service opens a new direct avenue for North American travellers to the Japanese island.
