American Airlines AAdvantage Adds Cash and Miles Redemption
Eligible AAdvantage members can soon combine cash payments with miles for domestic flights, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, with the option rolling out in the coming weeks.

Hybrid Redemption Option for AAdvantage Members
American Airlines is set to introduce a new redemption method for its AAdvantage loyalty programme, allowing members to combine cash payments with miles for flight bookings. This feature, expected to become available over the coming weeks, will enable eligible AAdvantage members in the United States to utilise their miles to reduce the cash cost of select domestic flights.
The airline stated that this development brings American Airlines in line with several of its competitors, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, and Southwest Airlines, which already offer similar hybrid booking options to their customers.
How the New System Works
Once the option is live on aa.com and within the American Airlines mobile application, AAdvantage members will log into their accounts and select their desired domestic cash flights. Flights to and from Alaska and Hawaii are excluded from this new redemption type.
During the checkout process, members will find a slider allowing them to choose the specific amount of AAdvantage miles they wish to apply towards the fare, thereby lowering the required cash payment. Unlike traditional award bookings, this method does not rely on standard award availability, offering greater flexibility for members to use their accumulated miles.
Redemption Value and Loyalty Point Implications
American Airlines has not publicly disclosed the exact value members will receive per mile when using this new cash and miles option, noting that pricing may vary based on the destination, itinerary, and specific flight. The available combinations are determined by the airline and may also depend on the member’s current mileage balance.
Industry analysis from October 2026 suggests that the redemption value could be approximately 1 cent per mile. This contrasts with a typical valuation of 1.45 cents per AAdvantage mile for standard award bookings.
Additionally, only the cash portion of the ticket is confirmed to earn miles and Loyalty Points, meaning that applying more miles could result in earning less towards elite status.
Global Trend Reflected in Asian Markets
While American Airlines' new hybrid redemption option primarily serves its domestic US market, the move aligns it with a trend long established by many Asian carriers.
Airlines such as Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have for years offered members the flexibility to combine miles with cash for bookings, providing greater utility for smaller mile balances or when full award availability is limited.
This global convergence in loyalty programme design shows a broader industry effort to enhance member flexibility, a development that Asian carriers may continue to refine in their own offerings to maintain competitive advantage and meet evolving passenger demands.
