Charlotte Airport Expands for American: Longer Passenger Walks Expected
Charlotte Douglas International Airport will invest $1.1 billion in airfield upgrades and a Concourse C extension. This expansion aims to alleviate gate congestion for American Airlines. However, the project is also projected to increase passenger walking distances, with some connections potentially exceeding one mile.

Airport Commits £1.1 Billion to Infrastructure
Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will invest approximately £1.1 billion in significant infrastructure upgrades. These projects aim to enhance operational efficiency and expand capacity, primarily benefiting American Airlines. The investment comprises two main components.
Firstly, £396 million is allocated for expanding the aircraft ramp south of Concourses B and C. This work seeks to improve aircraft circulation and reduce instances of planes becoming delayed on the tarmac. Secondly, a £700 million Concourse C extension is planned. This addition will create between 12 and 16 new gates, covering 380,000 square feet.
The overall objective is to mitigate gate gridlock, a current operational challenge at the airport, allowing American Airlines to manage more flights.
Construction Timelines and Operational Changes
The South Ramp expansion package is scheduled for bids this month, with construction commencing in March 2027 and lasting around four years.
This project includes reconstructing apron and taxilane pavement, converting the former crosswind Runway 5/23 into Taxiway J. This conversion will facilitate two-way aircraft movement south of Concourses B and C. A new 10,000-foot parallel runway is also set to open in autumn 2027, further optimising runway operations.
Construction for the Concourse C extension is slated to begin in 2029 or 2030, with a projected three-year completion period. The airport plans to utilise modular construction techniques for this extension, assembling large building sections off-site before installation to minimise disruption.
Increased Walking Distances for Travellers
While the expansion addresses aircraft operations, it presents new considerations for passengers. The Concourse C extension will likely lengthen walking distances for connecting travellers. Current estimates suggest connections between the far ends of the expanded Concourses B and C could span 5,000 to 6,000 feet, equating to approximately one to 1.15 miles.
Some regional jet connections, particularly from Concourse E to future outer-B gates, may extend up to 1.2 to 1.3 miles. These distances could translate into 20 to 35 minutes of walking for many passengers, especially when navigating crowded terminal areas.
The project does not include widening existing concourse corridors, meaning more passengers will use the same central terminal choke points.
Future Outlook for American Airlines and Passengers
American Airlines will gain significant operational flexibility and capacity with the new gates. The airline has also announced plans for new passenger facilities at Charlotte. These include a Flagship Lounge and an expanded Admirals Club footprint.
Preliminary discussions explored a 40,000-square-foot club on the D/E connector's upper level, potentially converting the current main club to retail. A larger 95,000-square-foot expansion is now being considered. While the airport has discussed a tunnel from outer C towards the Atrium to shorten some walks, this is not part of the current construction scope. Travellers should anticipate longer transit times for connections as these developments progress.
