O'Hare Begins Concourse E Construction

The Chicago Department of Aviation is progressing with its plans to build a new Concourse E at O'Hare International Airport. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson recently announced that the city will break ground on the initial phase of this project later in 2026. This first stage of Concourse E aims to add 14 new gates to the airport's infrastructure by 2030.

This development forms an integral part of the broader $8.8 billion ORDNext modernisation programme, designed to significantly upgrade O'Hare's facilities. A primary objective of this Concourse E expansion is to create the necessary capacity.

This capacity will then support the construction of the O'Hare Global Terminal, which is considered the centrepiece of the entire ORDNext initiative. The Global Terminal itself is scheduled to commence construction in 2029, with an anticipated completion date in 2033. This strategic sequencing ensures a cohesive and accelerated development timeline for the airport's future.

Revised Phasing Accelerates Global Terminal

The city's decision to revise the project's phasing followed extensive coordination with O'Hare's key hub carriers. These airline partners include major operators such as United Airlines and American Airlines. Officials stated this revised timeline offers significant benefits for the overall modernisation effort.

Crucially, it will allow for the O'Hare Global Terminal to be completed more quickly than originally planned. Furthermore, the new approach facilitates the addition of extra square footage and more gates within the terminal's final design. Following the expected completion of the Global Terminal in 2033, a second phase for Concourse E is slated to begin.

This subsequent expansion will introduce an additional 10 gates. Ultimately, Concourse E will feature a total of 24 operational gates by 2034, substantially increasing the airport's gate capacity. Mayor Johnson emphasised Chicago's commitment to building an O'Hare that meets the future needs of its residents, businesses, and visitors. He highlighted the importance of adding gates where required and maintaining momentum for this historic modernisation.

Concourse E Features and Connectivity

The new Concourse E is designed to be a substantial facility, spanning approximately 460,000 square feet across multiple stories. Its gates are engineered to accommodate a diverse range of aircraft, catering to various operational requirements.

This includes regional aircraft, standard narrowbody jets, and larger widebody aircraft, enabling flexibility for different flight types. The concourse will service both domestic and international routes, reflecting O'Hare's role as a major global gateway. Inside, the facility will incorporate a comprehensive suite of passenger amenities.

These will include dedicated airline lounges, various dining options, and retail spaces, aiming to enhance the traveller experience. Connectivity is a key feature; Concourse E will link directly to the new Concourse D and the O'Hare Global Terminal. This connection will be facilitated by an underground passenger tunnel, streamlining passenger movement between terminals.

Officials also confirmed that construction on Concourse D, which began approximately a year ago, is progressing according to schedule. Concourse D is expected to be fully operational by 2028.
