Baltic countries, including Estonia and Latvia, posted similar increases. Nordic nations such as Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden also recorded growth.
A visa industry insider noted the 2026 FIFA World Cup boosted travel demand to Europe and North America this summer. Following Norwegian player Erling Haaland's performance, inquiries about Norway travel products climbed significantly. This suggests specific events and public figures can influence destination popularity.
Diverse Global Travel Trends
Among traditional long-haul destinations, Canada, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States remained popular with Chinese travellers. Demand for these destinations primarily stemmed from overseas study, family visits, and business travel. China's resumption of group tours to Canada last November (2025) released pent-up demand for North American study tours.
For short-haul destinations, South Korea welcomed 12.8 million foreign visitors in the first seven months of this year. This represents a 21 percent increase from the previous year, according to the Korea Tourism Organization. Chinese mainland residents comprised nearly one-third of this total. South Korea expects Chinese mainland visitors to exceed seven million this year.
Outbound Hubs and Traveller Demographics
Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou continued to lead other Chinese cities in outbound visa application volume during the first half of 2026. Applications in Hangzhou and Chengdu increased, supported by expanded direct flight routes. Shenzhen, Wuhan, Xi’an, and Kunming also posted strong growth in application volumes. In terms of applicant profiles, elderly travellers accounted for over one-third of all Chinese outbound visa applicants handled by VFS Global in the first half.
