COMAC C919-600 High-Altitude Variant Completes Maiden Flight, Crucial for Plateau Routes
China's COMAC has flown its C919-600 high-altitude variant for the first time, a crucial step for domestic air travel to plateau regions. The compact narrowbody jet is designed specifically for operations from airports at elevated terrains, with Xizang Airlines as its primary customer.

C919-600 Conducts Initial Test Flight
The Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) successfully conducted the maiden test flight of its C919-600 narrowbody twinjet airliner on Wednesday, 29 July, 2026. This derivative of the C919 series is engineered specifically for operations at high-altitude airports, prevalent across China's plateau regions. The aircraft, bearing registration B-002U, departed from and returned to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) on China's east coast, according to reporting by Simple Flying. The flight lasted one hour and 59 minutes, taking off at 07:59 local time and landing at 09:58 local time. During its flight, tracking data from Flightradar24 shows the jet reached a maximum GPS altitude of approximately 22,000 feet, circling northeast of Shanghai. COMAC confirmed the aircraft completed all scheduled test subjects during this inaugural flight.
Tailored Design for Elevated Terrain Operations
COMAC designed the C919-600 to meet the specific demands of operating from high-altitude locations. This variant is more compact than other C919 family members, featuring a shortened fuselage achieved by removing six frames. These targeted design modifications also include improvements to system functions, as detailed in a statement released by COMAC following the test flight. The C919-600 will carry between 140 and 160 passengers, a reduced capacity compared to the standard C919-100 and C919-100ER models, which accommodate 158 to 192 passengers. This specialised design addresses the operational challenges posed by thinner air and lower atmospheric pressure at airports situated on high plateaus, which affect aircraft performance.
Xizang Airlines Secures Orders for High-Altitude Jet
The primary customer for the C919-600 is Xizang Airlines, formerly known as Tibet Airlines, which has placed an order for 40 units of the jet. Xizang Airlines operates from Lhasa Airport, located at an altitude of 3,570 metres (11,710 feet), making it a logical operator for a high-altitude aircraft. This collaboration in the jet's development was noted by AeroTime, as reported by Simple Flying. Currently, Xizang Airlines' fleet comprises 27 Airbus A319-100s, 15 A319neos (with five more on order), six A320-200s, and five A330-200s. The airline has also committed to ten COMAC C909 jets, alongside its C919-600 order. COMAC also plans a stretched-fuselage C919-800 model, capable of seating up to 240 passengers, expanding the C919 family's versatility.
Implications for Chinese Domestic Aviation and Beyond
The C919-600's successful maiden flight shows a significant progression in COMAC's C919 aircraft programme and strengthens China's domestic aviation manufacturing capabilities. This specialised variant directly addresses the unique requirements for air travel to China's numerous high-altitude regions, potentially improving connectivity and accessibility for travellers to destinations like Tibet. While the C919-600's commercial appeal is niche, other C919 variants have secured substantial orders. The standard C919-100 has 16 units in service with China Eastern Airlines and 12 with China Southern, with hundreds more on order, including 485 undisclosed commitments. The longer-range C919-100ER is operated by Air China and China Eastern Airlines. This expansion of the C919 family demonstrates COMAC's intent to compete across various market segments within China and potentially in other Asian markets with similar geographical challenges.
