Vietnam and Lao PDR Provinces Plan Integrated Travel

A delegation from Vietnam's northwestern province of Dien Bien held discussions with officials from northern Lao PDR's Bokeo province on 16 September. The talks aimed to formalise existing cooperation agreements, with a particular focus on expanding tourism connections and developing cross-border travel routes linking Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Both sides exchanged information regarding their socio-economic development, geographical advantages, and tourism potential, alongside strategies for destination management and promotion. They also shared insights and explored measures to enhance service quality and create distinct tourism products that reflect local cultural identities.

Joint Efforts for Destination Development

Khamseng Suliyavong, Vice Chairman of the Bokeo provincial Government Committee, stated that the discussions represented a crucial step towards implementing cooperation agreements between the two provinces. He emphasised Bokeo's strategic position at the border intersection, noting its significant potential for eco-tourism and international trade.

Mr. Suliyavong added that an enhanced partnership with Dien Bien would enable both localities to maximise their strengths and develop transport infrastructure to facilitate cross-border travel connecting Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Cao Thi Tuyet Lan, Standing Vice Chairwoman of the Dien Bien provincial People’s Council, confirmed that the visit translates Dien Bien's objective to broaden international tourism ties with northern Lao PDR and Thailand into concrete actions.

Streamlining Cross-Border Procedures

To achieve these objectives, the two provinces agreed to establish direct and regular cooperation between Dien Bien’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Bokeo’s Department of Culture and Tourism. These agencies will alternate in organising exchanges, sharing professional expertise, and supporting joint promotional activities.

Furthermore, authorities from Dien Bien and Bokeo committed to fostering an environment conducive for travel businesses to connect, conduct market research, and design new itineraries. They also plan to investigate coordination mechanisms to simplify entry and exit procedures for tour groups, specifically for self-drive car and motorcycle caravan fleets.

Communications will also be intensified through active data sharing and joint promotion of each locality’s cultural heritage, scenic locations, and signature tourism offerings across various media channels and major regional events.

Following the discussions, the Dien Bien delegation conducted field surveys of key tourism sites and service facilities in Bokeo to assess infrastructure and service capacity.

Outlook for Regional Tourism Growth

This enhanced cooperation aims to create more accessible and diverse travel opportunities for visitors exploring the northern regions of Lao PDR, Vietnam, and Thailand. The emphasis on developing self-drive car and motorcycle caravan tours suggests a strategic push for independent travel and regional road trips, catering to a growing segment of adventure tourists.

Industry stakeholders in all three countries can anticipate new tour product development and streamlined operational logistics, which could lead to increased tourist flows and direct economic benefits for communities in these border areas. The initiative could also serve as a model for similar cross-border tourism development efforts within the broader Mekong sub-region.
