D23 Event Highlights Future Park Developments

The Walt Disney Company announced significant park developments for Walt Disney World and Disneyland at its biennial D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event.

Held on the evening of 15 August 2026, at Anaheim's Honda Center, this year's showcase, titled "Horizons: A Carousel of Progress," focused on updates for projects previously revealed in 2024, alongside new details for attractions planned from 2027. The event serves as a primary platform for Walt Disney Imagineering to unveil its latest concepts.

In 2022, the showcase, dubbed "A Boundless Future," presented "blue sky" ideas, offering insight into potential future guest activities. In contrast, the 2026 event presented specific attractions, some already under active development, while others were displayed as concept art.

Magic Kingdom’s ‘Cars’ Themed Piston Peak

Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom is undergoing its most extensive construction phase in its 55-year history. Among the key updates is the "Cars"-themed area, Piston Peak, situated in Frontierland. Construction for this zone commenced in 2025, necessitating the closure of Tom Sawyer Island, the draining of Rivers of America, and the temporary relocation of the Liberty Bell.

First announced at D23 in 2024 with two attractions, The Walt Disney Company confirmed their names and further specifics this year. Miss Fritter's Daredevil Spin-Along will feature an animatronic Miss Fritter from "Cars 3", with guests riding in demolition derby vehicles on a track.

The Cars Ridge Run Rally will transport guests through Piston Peak, simulating an off-road adventure with varied terrain. The ride concludes with a lap around the Old Tankfull geyser before a sprint to the finish, where Lightning McQueen and Mater await.

Michael Hundgen, Vice President Creative for Walt Disney World, stated that the ride's new vehicle technology allows tyres and suspension to genuinely react to bumps, drops, and rocks, creating a realistic driving sensation.

Villains Land Officially Named and Detailed

A major expansion for Magic Kingdom, first teased at D23 2024, has been officially named "Villains Land" by The Walt Disney Company.

This new area, comparable in size to Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Hollywood Studios, will delve into Disney's darker narratives, featuring an original story centred around an evil wishing well with "dark, mysterious powers." The land is designed to attract Disney's prominent antagonists seeking to claim this power.

The first confirmed attraction for Villains Land is a roller coaster dedicated to Maleficent, the Mistress of All Evil from "Sleeping Beauty." Riders will race through the brambles and briars surrounding Maleficent's mountain fortress. The Walt Disney Company indicated this coaster would incorporate "never-before-seen elements" in its design.
