Dubai Introduces Mobile Passport Control

Dubai's General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA Dubai) officially introduced its "Click and Travel" mobile passport control system on 7 September 2026. This new service allows immigration officers to conduct entry and departure procedures directly with passengers throughout airport terminals, moving beyond traditional fixed counters.

Officers are equipped with mobile devices connected to Dubai's immigration databases, enabling secure access to traveller information and biometric verification. The announcement of this initiative was confirmed by the UAE's WAM news agency on the same date.

Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, stated that the programme reflects a strategic shift towards reimagining the passenger experience, placing individuals at the core of development and utilising advanced technologies for more efficient travel.

Faster Processing and Operational Flexibility

The "Click and Travel" system significantly streamlines border control operations, with the GDRFA reporting that each procedure can be completed in approximately 12 to 15 seconds. This enhanced speed is particularly beneficial during periods of high passenger volume and allows for the rapid deployment of border control teams across airport terminals as operational needs dictate.

The mobility offered by the system means immigration officers are no longer confined to fixed passport control stations, improving staff allocation and reducing potential bottlenecks. This adaptability enables border control operations to respond more swiftly to fluctuating passenger flows within the terminals, optimising overall airport efficiency.

Phased Rollout and Pilot Success

Before its official launch, "Click and Travel" underwent a pilot phase from May through 31 August 2026. During this period, the new mobile system successfully processed 31,373 entry and departure procedures, demonstrating its operational readiness. The service's current scope varies for arriving and departing travellers.

For all departures from Dubai, including UAE citizens, residents, and international visitors, the "Click and Travel" system is fully available. However, for arrivals, the initial phase is limited to UAE citizens and residents, meaning international visitors arriving in Dubai are not yet included in this mobile processing option. The GDRFA has indicated plans for a gradual expansion of the service based on evolving operational requirements.

Implications for Global Travellers

This new mobile passport control system does not alter existing entry requirements, visa exemptions, or duration of stay rules for the United Arab Emirates. Instead, its impact is on the method of border checks at Dubai airports, offering a more flexible and potentially faster process for many travellers.

For Asian travellers, Dubai serves as a crucial global transit hub, and the availability of "Click and Travel" for all departures will likely enhance their departure experience. While international visitors from Asia cannot yet use the system upon arrival, the GDRFA's commitment to gradual expansion suggests that this convenience will extend to them in the future.

Dubai authorities are also exploring the integration of additional mobile airport services beyond immigration, aiming to further develop smarter airports and reduce reliance on fixed infrastructure.
