Etihad Inaugurates Abu Dhabi to Calgary Direct Flights

Etihad Airways commenced its new non-stop service between Abu Dhabi and Calgary, Canada, with the inaugural flight EY-29 departing Abu Dhabi Sheikh Zayed International Airport on 25 October. The ultra-long-haul flight, covering 11,561 km over approximately 14 and a half hours, landed in Calgary on 26 October. This new connection marks a significant expansion for the airline.

Operated by a two-class Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the service offers 28 Business Class seats and 262 Economy Class seats. The airline reported that the inaugural flight was completely sold out, an uncommon occurrence for a brand-new route, indicating strong initial demand for the service.

Connecting South Asian Communities to India

While the choice of Calgary as a direct destination from Abu Dhabi initially surprised some, Etihad Airways' strategy targets a specific demographic. The airline aims to serve the growing South Asian community residing in Calgary, particularly passengers travelling to India.

By offering a direct link to its Abu Dhabi hub, Etihad enables these travellers to complete the longest segment of their journey and then connect efficiently to their final destinations in India, bypassing the need for connections through European or other North American airports. This new route is Etihad's eighth destination in North America, expanding its transatlantic network.

Capitalising on Calgary's Limited Competition

Etihad Airways' decision to select Calgary over other major Canadian cities like Vancouver, despite already serving Toronto, is rooted in the competitive landscape. The airline identified a market with surprisingly little competition for international flights from Calgary.

Many European carriers that facilitate travel between Canada and India do not operate directly from Calgary, and even Canadian airlines like Air Canada and WestJet maintain a limited presence on these routes. This gap presents an opportunity for Etihad to establish itself as a primary carrier for this specific travel corridor. The new service will operate four times per week.

Yields and Future Expansion for Gulf Carriers

The long-term success of the Abu Dhabi–Calgary route will largely depend on the yields Etihad Airways can command, particularly as the service is expected to be predominantly filled with connecting passengers.

While the inaugural flight was sold out, sustaining profitability on an ultra-long-haul route primarily reliant on transit traffic poses a challenge that has seen other airlines withdraw from Calgary previously. Etihad will monitor demand and load factors to determine if an increase in service frequency, potentially to a daily flight, is warranted.

Other Gulf carriers with extensive networks to India may observe this strategy closely, considering similar direct routes to North American cities with significant South Asian diaspora populations, evaluating the potential for new connection hubs.
