San Francisco Airport Increases Arrival Capacity After FAA Rule Change

Increased Arrival Rate for SFO
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is now authorised to manage up to 42 aircraft arrivals hourly. This change comes after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) partially eased its ban on parallel landings. The new staggered approach, approved on 12 August 2026, aims to improve airport capacity.
Previously, restrictions had reduced the maximum arrival rate to 36 planes per hour. Before March 2026, SFO could handle up to 54 arrivals hourly. The airport spokesperson, Doug Yakel, noted this revision does not fully restore prior arrival rates. However, he described it as a positive development for operations.
United Airlines, a major operator at SFO, welcomed the FAA’s decision. The carrier stated it had collaborated with the FAA to increase landing rates safely. This collaboration seeks to optimise the airport’s capacity utilisation.
Safety Review Prompted Restrictions
The FAA imposed the initial landing restrictions at SFO in late March 2026. These measures formed part of a wider safety review following a fatal mid-air collision. The incident involved a military Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet. It occurred in January 2025 during approach to Washington National Airport.
The Blackhawk pilot had relied on visual separation, prompting the FAA review of these rules. SFO’s airfield design presents specific challenges for parallel approaches. Its runways are only 750 feet apart. Current FAA rules require runways to be at least 4,300 feet apart for visual separation in low visibility. Previously, SFO operated parallel landings under an FAA exemption. The latest revision permits a staggered approach, differing from the prior side-by-side method.
Weather Dependency and Operational Impact
The new staggered approach at SFO is contingent on favourable weather conditions. When visibility is low, such as during rain, the airport must revert to a single-file landing approach. This is because both true side-by-side and staggered approaches rely on visual separation between aircraft. The close proximity of SFO’s runways prevents visual separation during poor weather.
This limits the airport’s ability to use the increased arrival rate consistently. On both 12 and 13 August 2026, low visibility conditions meant SFO continued single-file landings. This occurred despite the new staggered system being approved. The FAA has implemented a ground delay programme at SFO. This programme has seen maximum published delays reaching up to 93 minutes. Such delays affect airline schedules and passenger travel plans.
Outlook for Air Travel at SFO
The partial easing of FAA restrictions provides some relief for San Francisco International Airport. However, the airport’s operational efficiency remains vulnerable to weather. The continued reliance on visual separation for the staggered approach means low visibility will still cause reduced capacity.
