FAA Orders Inspections for Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a directive on Thursday, August 6, 2026, mandating inspections for hundreds of Boeing 737 MAX jets. This order follows reports of cracks detected in older-generation Boeing 737 Next Generation aircraft.

The airworthiness directive, which becomes effective on September 10, 2026, applies to approximately 471 Boeing 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9, and 737 MAX 200 models. Operators must inspect specific structural components: the fuselage skin and the bear straps.

Bear straps are metal sheets designed to reinforce fuselage structures, particularly around openings such as doorways and emergency exits. The FAA's action aims to proactively address potential safety concerns across the global 737 MAX fleet.

Structural Integrity Concerns Drive Precautionary Measure

The FAA's directive highlights that cracking in these components could compromise the principal structural element's ability to withstand limit loads, thereby adversely affecting the aircraft's overall structural integrity. While no cracks have been reported on any 737 MAX variants to date, the inspections are a precautionary measure.

The FAA notes the significant design similarities between the 737 Next Generation and the 737 MAX, which suggests the newer models could be susceptible to the same structural issues.

The agency stated that the directive addresses an unsafe condition on in-service airplanes, establishing compliance times for initial and repetitive inspections to ensure any crack is detected and repaired before it reaches a critical length.

Boeing's Prior Actions and MAX's Regulatory History

Boeing stated it had previously notified operators of the 737 Next Generation about the cracking problem in 2019. The manufacturer extended these inspection recommendations to the 737 MAX in 2024, citing the shared design and build processes between the two aircraft types.

The 737 MAX has undergone significant regulatory scrutiny following two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019, which led to a worldwide grounding of the fleet. The type was permitted to re-enter service only after regulators imposed new safety requirements on Boeing.

Earlier this week, in August 2026, the FAA certified the 737 MAX 7, which is the smallest variant of the MAX family, further expanding the operational fleet.
