Frankfurt Airport anticipates approximately nine million passengers between 26 June and 9 August 2026. Airport operator Fraport projects around 60,000 flight movements during this period. The airport will connect to 283 destinations across 92 countries this summer. The first holiday weekend, from 26 to 28 June, alone expects 616,000 travellers.

Fraport advises passengers, particularly those from non-European Union countries, to prepare for extended waiting times at border control checkpoints. This increase in processing duration is due to the European Union's Entry Exit System (EES). The EES is a new electronic border control system. It records traveller information at external Schengen Area borders.

Airport officials confirm additional staff and passenger flow management measures are in place. Despite these efforts, longer waits are still expected during peak periods.

Terminal Operations Shift Completed

A significant change for passengers this summer involves the completion of Terminal 3's transition. Following its opening, passenger operations at Terminal 2 have ceased. This closure allows for extensive renovation and modernisation works. All airlines previously operating from Terminal 2 have relocated to Terminal 3.

Consequently, all flights now operate exclusively from Terminals 1 and 3. Passengers must verify their airline's departure terminal before travelling. The airport's new Sky Line people mover now connects Terminals 1 and 3. This system aims to simplify transfers for connecting passengers. Technical testing and trial operations for the Sky Line concluded recently, ahead of the busy summer season.

Enhanced Services and Travel Advice

Frankfurt Airport Terminal 3 introduces new passenger facilities. Most passengers departing from Terminal 1 and all from Terminal 3 benefit from upgraded CT security screening technology. Travellers can also pre-book security screening time slots. This is available through the FRA SmartWay service. This service helps reduce waiting times at security checkpoints.

Many airlines at Frankfurt Airport continue to expand digital services. A luggage collection service is available for passengers with participating airlines. Due to high demand during the holiday season, the airport recommends reserving parking spaces in advance. Officials also encourage travellers to consider public transport options. This helps reduce congestion around the airport during busy periods.

Travellers using Frankfurt Airport this summer must plan for operational adjustments. Non-EU travellers should arrive at least three hours before departure. This accounts for potential delays at EES border controls. EU, EEA, Switzerland, and German residence permit holders also benefit from arriving three hours early.
