Hilton, Scandic Forge Nordic Hotel Development Pact
The multi-year deal targets Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland, with the first 284-room Hilton property near Copenhagen Airport slated for a 2029 opening.

Nordic Expansion via Partnership
Scandic Hotels Group and Hilton have entered a multi-year agreement to explore and pursue new hotel development opportunities across the Nordic region. This collaboration focuses on expanding the presence of both hotel companies in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland.
The arrangement will utilise Hilton's international brands and market reach, combined with Scandic's regional operational platform, local knowledge, and established Nordic footprint.
This partnership is designed to consider individual development projects for each company, rather than involving a broader conversion of Scandic's existing hotel portfolio, according to statements from both groups.
First Project Near Copenhagen Airport
The initial project under this new agreement is planned for Copenhagen. Scandic has signed a specific deal for a Hilton Hotels & Resorts property at Scanport, located close to Copenhagen Airport. This new hotel will feature 284 rooms and is scheduled to open its doors in 2029. Scandic will manage the property under a franchise agreement with Hilton.
Planned amenities for the hotel include a restaurant and bar, dedicated spaces for meetings and events, wellness facilities, a fitness area, and an executive lounge offering views of the Öresund Strait. Construction is set to commence once all outstanding conditions are fulfilled, Scandic stated.
Long-Standing Collaboration Drives Growth
This strategic agreement builds on a collaboration spanning more than two decades between Hilton and Scandic. Chris Nassetta, Hilton's President and CEO, noted that the deal represents a significant milestone for the company in the Nordics, creating a clear pathway to expand its brands across four key markets and reflecting its long-term ambition for the region.
Jens Mathiesen, President and CEO of Scandic Hotels Group, affirmed that the agreement aligns with Scandic's long-term growth strategy. Scandic already operates three franchised Hilton Hotels & Resorts properties in Helsinki: Hilton Helsinki Airport, Hilton Helsinki Strand, and Hilton Helsinki Kalastajatorppa. The Hilton Helsinki Airport is also undergoing a phased renovation programme to update its guest areas.
Global Brand Strategies in Asia
While this partnership focuses on the Nordic region, the model of global hotel brands collaborating with strong local operators holds relevance for Asian markets.
Many international hospitality groups expand their presence across diverse Asian countries through similar franchise or management agreements, leveraging local expertise for operational efficiency and market penetration. This approach allows for quicker growth in competitive landscapes without requiring direct ownership of every property.
Asian hotel groups and developers often seek such partnerships to bring renowned global brands into their portfolios, capitalising on international recognition while maintaining local management. The success of this Nordic venture may encourage further exploration of similar collaborative expansion strategies for global brands operating or intending to operate in Asia.
