Major Expansion for Staybridge Suites

IHG Hotels & Resorts announced on 16 September 2026 a landmark Master Development Agreement with Australian property developer Aland. This agreement introduces Staybridge Suites, IHG’s globally established upscale extended-stay brand, to Australia.

The partnership aims to build a significant national portfolio of at least 15 hotels, comprising a minimum of 2,000 rooms, across the country. Under the terms, Aland gains exclusive development rights for Staybridge Suites in Australia, establishing a long-term pathway for the brand's growth. IHG stated this represents a substantial expansion of the existing relationship between the two organisations.

First Properties in Greater Sydney

To initiate this national expansion, IHG and Aland simultaneously signed the first two franchise agreements for Staybridge Suites in Australia. These initial properties include the 130-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Parramatta and the 112-room Staybridge Suites Sydney Leppington.

Both hotels are located within Greater Western Sydney and will be managed by Signature Hotel Management Group. These two developments are set to form the initial phase of the broader national portfolio, providing immediate momentum for the brand's Australian debut.

Driving Extended-Stay Growth

IHG Hotels & Resorts highlighted the significant growth potential within Australia's extended-stay segment. This demand is supported by corporate travellers, individuals undertaking project-based work, those relocating, and guests seeking increased flexibility for longer visits.

Matt Tripolone, managing director for Australasia & Pacific at IHG Hotels & Resorts, stated that establishing a portfolio of at least 15 hotels and 2,000 rooms with a single development partner offers a clear strategy to build a meaningful position in this market.

He added that Aland possesses substantial development capability and ambition, aligning with IHG's vision for long-term growth.

Asian Market Implications

This expansion of Staybridge Suites in Australia carries implications for the broader Asia-Pacific travel market. As a key destination for business and leisure travellers from Asia, Australia's increased offering of extended-stay accommodation will provide more options for Asian expatriates and corporate visitors seeking flexible, longer-term lodging.

The introduction of 15 new properties could influence competitive pricing and availability in major Australian cities, particularly for those travelling from regional hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

This strategic move by IHG and Aland also suggests that other global hospitality groups may intensify their focus on the extended-stay segment across Asia-Pacific, responding to similar evolving traveller needs observed in markets like Australia.
