IHG and Xanga Partner for Debrecen Holiday Inn Express
IHG Hotels & Resorts confirmed a new Holiday Inn Express & Suites will open in Hungary's second-largest city by 2029, marking its first property in Debrecen.

IHG Expands into Debrecen by 2029
IHG Hotels & Resorts has confirmed an agreement with Xanga Group, a Hungarian investment and property development firm, to establish a Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Debrecen, Hungary. This new property is scheduled to commence operations in 2029.
The venture represents a significant expansion for IHG, marking its inaugural presence in Debrecen, the country's second-largest city, and its first hotel in Eastern Hungary. The partnership was formalised during IHG’s Warsaw Investor Day Poland & CEE event, signalling the brand's strategic growth in Central Europe.
Property Features and Mixed-Use Development
The forthcoming Holiday Inn Express & Suites will feature a total of 120 accommodation options, comprising 100 guest rooms and 20 suites. Designed to serve both business and leisure visitors, the hotel will provide complimentary internet access and an Express Café & Bar.
The property is integrated into a broader mixed-use scheme, located approximately one kilometre from Debrecen’s city centre. This development will encompass residential spaces, commercial offices, and various retail outlets, creating a comprehensive urban hub for residents and travellers alike.
Strategic Growth for IHG and Debrecen
István Herdon, founder and CEO of Xanga Group, stated that the project reflects his company's long-standing commitment to Debrecen's economic growth over more than two decades. He noted that the Holiday Inn Express & Suites, developed with IHG, aims to reinforce Debrecen's status as an international business and tourism destination by offering modern and reliable accommodation.
Willemijn Geels, IHG Europe Development vice-president, described Debrecen as one of Central Europe's most dynamic growth stories. She added that this signing aligns with IHG's strategy to expand beyond Budapest and meet the increasing demand for quality, internationally branded hotels in the region’s emerging cities.
Implications for Central European Travel
The entry of an international brand like Holiday Inn Express into Debrecen suggests growing confidence in Central Europe's secondary cities as travel and business hubs.
For industry observers in Asia, this trend mirrors the increasing investment in emerging urban centres across Southeast Asia, where international hotel groups are expanding their footprint beyond capital cities to capture rising domestic and regional tourism.
Travellers to Hungary will gain a new, globally recognised accommodation option, potentially increasing competition and choice in Debrecen's hospitality market by 2029. This development could encourage further international investment in similar fast-growing regions across the continent, driving new visitor flows.
