IHG to Launch Kimpton Hotel in Rome by 2029
The new property marks the Kimpton brand's introduction to the Italian capital, adding 114 guest rooms and a cultural arts venue in the Via Veneto district.

Kimpton's Rome Debut Set for 2029
IHG Hotels & Resorts has announced an agreement to establish the first Kimpton hotel in Rome, Italy, with an expected opening in 2029. This development will introduce the Kimpton brand to the Italian capital, expanding IHG’s presence in the city. The hotel will be situated in Rome's Via Veneto district, becoming the third IHG property in that specific area.
Owned by Castello Sgr’s Rome Hotel Development Fund, which receives full backing from the 1AM Rome Prime Real Estate Development Fund, the project signifies a notable addition to Rome’s luxury hospitality sector.
Property Features and Historic Restoration
The new Kimpton site will encompass 114 guest rooms, designed to offer a distinct experience for travellers. Plans for the property include an interior courtyard, a restaurant, a rooftop bar, and various wellness amenities. Additionally, dedicated facilities for corporate meetings and events will be available.
The project involves converting an an existing structure in central Rome. As part of this redevelopment, an on-site theatre will undergo restoration and conversion into a multipurpose venue, intended for cultural arts and other events, blending modern luxury with historic preservation.
Strategic Expansion in Italy and Europe
This upcoming Rome location will be Kimpton's second in Italy, complementing the existing Kimpton Villa Miramare Taormina. Across Europe, the Kimpton brand currently operates 14 hotels, with six additional properties, including the Rome project, under development.
Willemijn Geels, Vice-President of Development for IHG Hotels & Resorts Europe, stated that Rome remains a highly attractive luxury travel destination due to its global appeal, rich cultural heritage, and a flourishing hospitality market.
Geels further noted that Italy is a priority market for IHG, having experienced substantial growth in recent years, making Rome an ideal city for introducing Kimpton with this particular project.
Implications for Luxury Travel and Asian Markets
The introduction of a new luxury brand like Kimpton in a prime European capital such as Rome will provide more diverse choices for discerning travellers, including those from Asia seeking high-end European experiences.
The hotel's distinctive design vision and unique theatre concept are expected to contribute a fresh luxury and lifestyle offering, reflecting the brand's reputation for individuality and local character.
For Asian hotel groups and developers, IHG’s continued expansion in key European markets demonstrates the enduring appeal of established luxury destinations and the strategy of converting existing structures to meet demand.
This trend could inform similar urban redevelopment and brand introduction efforts in growing Asian cities, though direct comparisons require assessing local market dynamics and heritage preservation regulations.
