Incheon Airport Secures Top Global Service Accreditation for Five Years
South Korea's Incheon International Airport is the first worldwide to achieve the highest Airports Council International Customer Experience Accreditation five times consecutively.

Incheon International Airport Sets Global Service Standard
South Korea's Incheon International Airport has earned the highest rating in the Airports Council International (ACI) Customer Experience Accreditation Program for a fifth consecutive year. This achievement marks Incheon as the first airport worldwide to maintain this top certification for five straight years.
The ACI, which is the largest global association for airports, introduced its customer experience accreditation programme in 2019. This programme differs from the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) initiative, which gauges passenger satisfaction through surveys.
Instead, the accreditation evaluates an airport's operational approach to managing and improving customer experience, considering eight key areas such as customer understanding, strategy, operational enhancements, and service innovation, as reported by the Seoul Economic Daily newspaper.
Technology Enhances Passenger Experience
The Airports Council International recognised Incheon Airport for its effective application of big data, its focus on resolving passenger inconveniences, and its integration of smart technologies, including artificial intelligence, according to The Chosun Daily. Among its key innovations is a passenger forecast system.
This system analyses flight reservation data to anticipate peak congestion times and provides advance alerts to travellers. The Chosun Daily reported that this predictive system maintains an error rate of approximately 1%.
Furthermore, the airport operates a real-time arrival baggage information service, enabling passengers to monitor the precise location of their checked luggage using their mobile devices.
Increased Passenger Numbers Amidst Global Recognition
This consistent recognition for service quality arrives as Incheon Airport experiences a notable increase in passenger traffic. The airport secured its position as the world's second-best airport, trailing only Singapore Changi, in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards. Data for the first half of this year shows Incheon handled 38.39 million international passengers.
This figure represents a 6.3% rise compared to the same period in the previous year, demonstrating a growing demand for travel through the facility.
Future Infrastructure Investment Targets 2035 Completion
To further enhance its capabilities and manage future growth, Incheon Airport's operator plans a comprehensive renovation of its Terminal 1. This modernisation project is slated for completion by 2035 and represents a significant investment exceeding 1.77 trillion won, which converts to approximately US$1.3 billion.
This substantial capital outlay is aimed at upgrading existing facilities and ensuring the airport can continue to meet evolving passenger demands and maintain its high service standards into the next decade.
Implications for Asian Aviation Competition
Incheon Airport's sustained top-tier service and substantial infrastructure investment could intensify competition among major Asian aviation hubs.
This ongoing commitment to customer experience and modernisation may prompt other regional airports, such as Singapore Changi, Hong Kong International, and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, to accelerate their own development and service improvement programmes, particularly as passenger volumes across Asia continue their upward trajectory towards 2035.
This strategic focus by a leading Asian airport may drive a new standard for passenger services throughout the continent.
