South Korea currently endures a severe heatwave, pushing temperatures to record levels. On August 2, Yangsan registered 42.5 degrees Celsius, marking the highest temperature recorded in the country in over a century. The Korea Meteorological Administration confirmed this national record. Authorities have urged residents in affected regions to halt outdoor activities immediately.

In response, Incheon International Airport has become an unexpected sanctuary for many seeking relief from the scorching conditions. A growing number of non-travellers, including seniors, now frequent the airport. They spend hours playing games, dining on packed lunches, and resting on benches, as observed by The Korea Herald.

Airport Amenities and Accessibility Attract Non-Travellers

Incheon International Airport, located approximately 50 kilometres from central Seoul, offers easy access via the subway system. This is particularly beneficial for individuals aged 65 and above, who can travel on South Korea's subway network for free.

The airport is also recognised for its high standards; it was named the world's second-best airport in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, ranking behind Singapore's Changi Airport. Its reputation for efficient operations, cleanliness, and modern amenities makes it an appealing destination for heatwave refugees.

Terminals provide air conditioning, ample seating, complimentary Wi-Fi, charging stations, and clean restrooms, all contributing to a comfortable environment.

Operational Pressures Mount for Airport Staff

The consistent presence of non-travellers staying for extended periods has placed increased demands on Incheon Airport's operational teams. Staff now face heightened requirements for cleaning services and waste management across the terminals. Monitoring public areas has also intensified to ensure order and safety for all occupants.

Despite these new pressures, Incheon Airport maintains its stance as a public facility open to everyone. Airport management states it continues to oversee terminal operations carefully. The aim is to minimise any inconvenience to actual travellers using the facility for its primary purpose.

Balancing Public Access with Peak Travel Season

This influx of heatwave refugees coincides with one of Incheon Airport's busiest summer travel seasons on record. The airport anticipates serving 3.77 million passengers between July 25 and September 10 this year, averaging approximately 222,000 travellers daily.

The dual pressure from a high volume of travellers and a significant number of non-travellers seeking refuge strains airport resources. Airport management must therefore balance its commitment to public access with the need to maintain efficient operations for air travel.
