National Digital Tourism Stack Launched

India's Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), introduced the National Digital Tourism Stack this week, aiming to broaden access for travellers seeking accommodation and activities beyond the country's established hotel chains and major attractions.

The new platform is designed to simplify the process of discovering and booking a wider array of tourism services, including independent homestays, local guides, diverse experiences, and various transport providers across the nation. This initiative reflects the government's strategy to enhance the visibility and accessibility of India's extensive tourism offerings.

Phased Rollout Planned for 2027

The implementation of the National Digital Tourism Stack is scheduled in distinct phases, as outlined by the government. A pilot programme is set to commence in January 2027, allowing for initial testing and refinement of the platform's functionalities.

Following this introductory phase, a more comprehensive rollout is anticipated from July 2027, gradually expanding the network's reach and integrating a greater number of tourism businesses. This phased approach is intended to ensure a smooth transition and effective integration of the diverse components of India's tourism sector onto the new digital framework.

Tackling India's Fragmented Tourism Market

The primary objective behind the National Digital Tourism Stack is to address the significant fragmentation within India's tourism market.

While large-scale hotels, airlines, and prominent attractions typically benefit from sophisticated online distribution channels, thousands of smaller, local businesses and unique experiences often operate through disparate websites, social media channels, direct offline bookings, or various intermediaries.

The Ministry of Tourism and ONDC expect the new system to provide a unified digital presence for these smaller operators, offering them greater online visibility and direct booking capabilities that were previously difficult to achieve individually.

Impact on Travellers and Local Operators

For travellers, the National Digital Tourism Stack is expected to open up easier access to a more authentic and diverse range of Indian tourism offerings, enabling them to book local homestays and unique experiences directly.

For the industry, particularly smaller operators, the platform offers a pathway to increased online reach and reduced reliance on fragmented booking methods.

This model could serve as a blueprint for other Asian nations, such as Indonesia or Vietnam, which also possess rich local tourism sectors where independent guides and small accommodation providers struggle for online visibility against larger, established players. Such countries might explore similar open digital infrastructure to empower their local tourism economies.
