India Becomes Top Market for Skyscanner

India has emerged as Skyscanner's largest market globally by user volume, marking a significant shift in the travel search platform's user distribution. Data from Skyscanner India reveals that searches originating from the country have climbed by 22% year-on-year, surpassing the platform's overall global growth rate of 17%.

Neel Ghose, a travel trends and destinations expert at Skyscanner India, shared these figures in Delhi while discussing the company's Travel Trends 2027 report. This growth shows India's increasing influence on the global travel landscape, with a burgeoning base of travellers actively seeking out destinations.

International Travel Preference Rises

Beyond the sheer volume, a notable transformation in Indian travel preferences is evident, according to Mr Ghose. Just three years ago, approximately 80% of Skyscanner's redirects from India were for domestic bookings, with only 20% directed towards international travel.

This ratio has almost inverted, with the latest figures showing a near-even split: 52% of searches are now for domestic trips, while 48% are for international destinations. This substantial shift reflects both Skyscanner's strategic initiatives to engage first-time international travellers and a broader evolution in how Indian consumers approach travel planning.

Value-Driven Traveller Intent

Mr Ghose explained that while there is a heightened desire to travel among Indians, there is also a strong emphasis on achieving better value for their expenditure. This value-seeking mindset informs their booking decisions, moving beyond simple destination promotion.

Despite this growing intent, Indian travellers typically finalise their plans closer to departure dates compared with many other global markets. These insights, presented during the discussion of Skyscanner's Travel Trends 2027 report, indicate a maturing market that is becoming more discerning about its travel investments.

Implications for Asia's Travel Industry

The expansion of India's outbound travel market, characterised by a strong appetite for international destinations and a focus on value, holds significant implications for the wider Asian travel industry. Airlines and hospitality providers across Southeast Asia and the Middle East, popular regions for Indian travellers, can expect continued growth in demand.

However, to capture this market, operators will need to tailor offerings that clearly demonstrate value, potentially through competitive pricing, bundled services, or unique activities.

The trend also suggests a need for more agile marketing and booking systems to cater to India's relatively last-minute booking habits, enabling destinations to attract and accommodate this rapidly expanding segment effectively.
