The Italian Consulate has updated its visa application requirements for individuals residing in the UAE this year. Stricter conditions now apply to family reunification visas. These changes affect spouses of EU citizens whose marriages occurred outside their country of origin.

Previously, a marriage certificate from the country where the wedding took place was sufficient for processing. Under the new regulations, applicants must now provide the original marriage certificate issued by their home country. This document also requires official authentication or an apostille to be considered valid.

The Italian Consulate, working through VFS Global for Schengen visa processing in the UAE, has emphasised this point. Incomplete files will lead to rejection. This policy mandates precision in documentation, particularly for those navigating the updated family reunification criteria.

Applicants should allow additional time to procure the correct home-country paperwork before scheduling any appointments.

Student Visa Process Streamlined for UAE-Based Applicants

In contrast to the stricter family reunification rules, the Italian Consulate has simplified the student visa application process for individuals based in the UAE. Previously, students needed to send their final school certificates to the curriculum's home country for attestation. This included requirements for A-Levels in the UK, IB in Switzerland, or CBSE/ICSE in India.

This extra step has now been eliminated. Students can submit the original certificate issued by their school within the UAE. This document must be verified by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and clearly state the completion of studies and the curriculum followed. An Italian translation must also accompany the certificate.

Furthermore, the Certificate of Value (DOV) and CIMEA qualification assessment, once near-automatic requirements, are now only necessary if the specific Italian university requests them for registration purposes. A confirmed flight reservation remains a non-negotiable document for all student visa applications.

Navigating the New Requirements and Future Outlook

These revised visa regulations from the Italian Consulate underscore the need for all UAE-based applicants to meticulously review their required document lists. The consulate's clear message is that there is less tolerance for error in submissions.

Family reunification applicants, particularly those married abroad, must factor in additional time to obtain authenticated original marriage certificates from their home countries. Conversely, students will find their application process less administratively burdensome, no longer needing to send certificates for overseas attestation.

While the immediate focus is on these updated requirements, the Italian Consulate has previously discussed the potential introduction of a digital nomad visa for remote workers.
