New Nationwide Rail Pass for Autumn Travel
JR Japan Railways Group has introduced the Aki no Norihodai Pass, a new rail ticket designed for extensive autumn travel throughout Japan. This pass grants travellers three consecutive days of unlimited rides on JR regular and rapid trains across the country.
The initiative aims to encourage exploration of Japan's diverse regions during a season often favoured for its mild weather and scenic beauty, providing a cost-effective way to access various destinations without regional restrictions on eligible train types.
Pass Inclusions and Exclusions
The Aki no Norihodai Pass covers travel on JR's regular and rapid (kaisoku) train services, allowing access to numerous local lines nationwide. It also includes unlimited rides on JR-managed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) highway buses. However, the pass does not extend to express or special express trains, meaning it cannot be used for travel on the Shinkansen bullet train network.
This focus on local and rapid services encourages visitors to explore areas beyond the major Shinkansen routes, potentially easing congestion in popular tourist hubs.
Pricing and Purchase Details
The Aki no Norihodai Pass is priced at 7,850 yen for adult travellers and 3,920 yen for children. Sales for the pass will commence on September 18, 2026, and conclude on October 16, 2026. The pass is valid for use for any three consecutive days chosen by the traveller between October 3 and October 18, 2026.
Travellers can purchase the pass at major JR stations, designated JR travel centres, and through various third-party travel agencies across Japan.
Hokkaido Shinkansen Option and Traveller Benefits
For those planning to visit Japan's northernmost prefecture, Hokkaido, an optional Hokkaido Shinkansen Option ticket is available. This supplementary ticket costs 4,650 yen for adults and 2,320 yen for children.
It permits a single ride on the Hokkaido Shinkansen line between Shin Aomori and Kikonai Stations, alongside one ride on the non-JR Donan Isaribi Tetsudo Line from Kikonai to Goryokaku Station, where connections to JR lines are accessible.
This new pass offers travellers a flexible and economical way to explore Japan's regional attractions, particularly appealing to those seeking a more immersive experience away from the busiest tourist spots during the autumn season.
