Lemon Tree Hotels Targets UAE, Thailand, Maldives for International Expansion
Indian hospitality group Lemon Tree Hotels plans significant international growth, targeting the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and the Maldives. This strategic move aims to serve its existing Indian customer base travelling abroad, leveraging its domestic market strength in popular short-haul destinations.

Strategic International Growth Underway
Lemon Tree Hotels, an Indian hospitality group, prepares for substantial international expansion. The company plans to enter the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, and the Maldives. This strategic initiative aims to cater to its established Indian customer base travelling overseas. The group intends to leverage its strong domestic market position.
These specific destinations are popular short-haul choices for Indian visitors. Executive Chairman Patanjali Keswani confirmed this approach during the company's first-quarter earnings call earlier this week. The expansion reveals a focused strategy to grow beyond India's borders.
Following the Customer Base Abroad
Mr Keswani articulated a clear philosophy: "Go where your customers go." He suggested that Indian hotel companies can now utilise their domestic customer base as a springboard for global expansion. Lemon Tree's demand data shows 45 per cent of bookings come from repeat guests. The company operates a loyalty programme with approximately 2.5 million members.
However, only about half of its repeat customers are enrolled. This presents a clear opportunity to strengthen customer relationships when they travel internationally. The group prioritises destinations within roughly three hours' flying time of India. This focus ensures accessibility for its core customer segment.
Leveraging Existing Footprint and Market Trends
Lemon Tree Hotels already maintains an international presence, with operations in Nepal and Dubai. The chosen target markets—UAE, Thailand, and the Maldives—attract a significant volume of Indian tourism. Their close proximity to India makes them frequent choices for short leisure or business trips. This expansion reflects a broader trend of increasing Indian outbound travel.
The company seeks to capitalise on established travel patterns and its brand recognition among Indian travellers. This move deepens the group's reach into key regional travel corridors, enhancing its competitive standing.
Implications for Travellers and Industry
Lemon Tree Hotels' expansion demonstrates its confidence in both its brand appeal and the growth of the Indian outbound travel market. This strategy could bolster loyalty among its domestic guests. Offering familiar lodging options abroad may secure repeat business and foster deeper customer engagement. The move will intensify competition within the targeted hospitality markets.
Other regional and international hotel groups may need to review their own strategies in response. Travellers can anticipate more accommodation choices catering to Indian preferences in the UAE, Thailand, and the Maldives. The company's success will depend on effective market entry and operational execution in these new territories.
