London's Chessington to host world's first Minecraft hotel in 2027
Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios revealed plans for the 69-room Minecraft World Hotel and an 'Escape the Nether' rollercoaster at the Chessington World of Adventures Resort.

London's Chessington to open Minecraft Hotel in 2027
Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios have announced plans for the world's inaugural Minecraft-themed hotel, slated to open in 2027 at the Chessington World of Adventures Resort in London. This development, revealed during the Minecraft LIVE event, will introduce the Minecraft World Hotel alongside a new rollercoaster.
The hotel will be an integral part of a dedicated Minecraft World area within the resort, aiming to immerse guests in the popular game's universe. This expansion signifies a major addition to the resort's attractions, drawing on a globally recognised intellectual property to enhance its appeal to both families and gaming enthusiasts.
Immersive Theming Across 69 Rooms
The new Minecraft World Hotel will feature 69 guest rooms spread across four floors, comprising 20 premium and 49 standard accommodations. Merlin Entertainments stated that each room, corridor, and communal space will draw inspiration from Minecraft's distinct biomes, characters, mobs, colours, and textures.
Upon arrival, guests will check in amidst blocky Overworld trees and animals, before using lifts designed to resemble Nether Portals. Corridors will evoke the feel of mine tunnels, leading to bedrooms that Merlin Entertainments has termed "respawn points," offering a direct nod to the game's mechanics.
Daisy Mercedes, Creative Producer at Merlin Entertainments, emphasised the meticulous crafting of details to reflect the game's essence and community.
Themed Dining and Rollercoaster Details
Dining options at the Minecraft World Hotel will extend the immersive activity. Plans include an underwater-themed restaurant, drawing inspiration from Minecraft's ocean biomes, alongside a Potion Bar designed to reflect the Woodland Mansion structure from the game.
Complementing the hotel, the new rollercoaster, named "Escape the Nether," is billed as the world's first Minecraft-themed ride. It will transport riders through dark indoor mine settings before emerging through a Nether portal into an Overworld-themed zone. Guests will board minecarts, joining iconic characters Steve and Alex on their adventure.
The broader Minecraft World area will also feature additional family-friendly rides, themed dining venues, and retail outlets.
Market Response and Asia's Themed Attractions
While Merlin Entertainments and Mojang Studios have not yet disclosed the exact opening date for the Minecraft World Hotel or its room rates, interested guests can join a waitlist on Chessington's website for updates. Bookings are not currently open.
This venture highlights a growing trend in the global hospitality and entertainment sectors: integrating popular intellectual properties into physical attractions to create highly immersive experiences.
In Asia, markets such as Japan, South Korea, and China have seen significant investment in themed entertainment, exemplified by Universal Studios Japan's Super Nintendo World or Shanghai Disneyland.
The success of such IP-driven developments in Western markets could encourage further exploration by Asian developers and operators into similar partnerships, potentially leading to new themed hotels or attractions based on popular games or media franchises within the region in the coming years.
