Electrocution Incident at Bengaluru Hotel

A Lufthansa flight attendant and another foreign national died from electrocution in the swimming pool of the Conrad Hotel in Bengaluru, India, on Friday evening, 30 October 2026.

Local officials identified the victims as 57-year-old Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a Lufthansa crew member on a layover, and 45-year-old Juraj Horvat, a Slovakian national working as a project manager for IBM. The tragic event occurred in the third-floor outdoor swimming pool of the luxury five-star hotel, located in Bengaluru's Ulsoor district.

Two other individuals sustained electrocution injuries and were transported to hospital: a United States national staying as a guest at the hotel and an Indian hotel worker who attempted to assist the victims. Lufthansa confirmed with deep sadness the passing of its crew member following the accident during a layover in the city.

Hotel and Police Response

Following the incident, the Conrad Hotel announced that its outdoor swimming pool would be closed on 31 October for "maintenance purposes," issuing an apology for any inconvenience. Local police immediately cordoned off the area for forensic examination and electrical safety inspections.

The police commissioner for Bengaluru commented that an "unfortunate incident" had occurred, involving a "suspected electrical leakage" in the terrace-level swimming pool, which "appears to be a case of electrocution." Authorities stated that the precise cause of death would be determined upon the submission of all medical and expert technical reports. The pool area was later released back to the hotel operator after initial investigations.

Lufthansa Operations Continue

A spokesperson for Lufthansa conveyed the airline's profound sadness regarding the loss of its crew member, stating, "Our deepest sympathies go out to the family, relatives and friends of the deceased crew member." The airline requested understanding that, out of respect for privacy, no further details about the accident's circumstances or the individual would be provided.

Lufthansa maintains two daily flight services to Bengaluru, with one originating from Munich and the other from Frankfurt. Both flights scheduled to depart from Bengaluru to Germany in the early hours of Saturday morning, 31 October, proceeded as planned. The airline did not indicate any immediate changes to its Sunday morning flight schedule.

Safety Implications for Asian Hospitality

This tragic event in Bengaluru underscores the critical importance of rigorous electrical safety standards within the hospitality sector, particularly for facilities like swimming pools that cater to international travellers and airline crews on layovers.

As investigations continue to pinpoint the exact cause, the incident may prompt a review of safety protocols and maintenance schedules across luxury hotels in major Asian travel hubs. Airlines operating to the region, including those with substantial crew layover requirements, might also intensify their scrutiny of partner hotel safety audits.

For travellers planning stays in Asia, this incident highlights the need for hotels to transparently communicate their safety measures and for guests to be aware of emergency procedures, ensuring peace of mind in popular destinations.
