MATTA Connect Strengthens Malaysian B2B Travel Trade Platform in Ipoh
The second edition of MATTA Connect, held recently in Ipoh, Malaysia, has solidified its position as a key regional business-to-business travel trade platform. The event drew 300 local and international buyers alongside 100 sellers, with participants reporting productive commercial discussions and new partnership formations, according to TTG Asia on July 30, 2026.

Increased Participation and Industry Endorsement
The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) concluded its second MATTA Connect event in Ipoh, demonstrating its growing relevance as a dedicated B2B travel trade forum. The gathering, reported by TTG Asia on July 30, 2026, saw an assembly of 300 buyers from both domestic and international markets, interacting with 100 sellers. Participants indicated that the meetings were of high quality and led to new commercial leads. Nigel Wong, president of MATTA, observed that the increased participation, broader international representation, and more substantial business engagements confirm the industry’s appreciation for a focused B2B platform. He noted this complements the association's larger, consumer-oriented MATTA Fair. The return of previous delegates, coupled with the attendance of new participants, further reflects increasing confidence in the event’s ability to foster meaningful connections within the travel sector.
Evolving Beyond Matching to Strategic Dialogue
MATTA Connect is evolving beyond mere business matching, transforming into a forum where industry stakeholders can exchange ideas on critical market trends, innovation, sustainability practices, and future collaborative efforts. This strategic shift was highlighted by MATTA president Nigel Wong, as reported by TTG Asia on July 30, 2026. Looking ahead, MATTA intends to enhance participation from both regional and emerging markets. A core objective for the platform is to showcase Malaysia’s varied tourism products, with a particular focus on second-tier destinations and distinct local offerings that might otherwise receive less exposure. This approach aims to diversify the country’s tourism appeal and distribute economic benefits more widely across different communities.
Delegate Successes and Regional Connections
Delegates at MATTA Connect reported tangible business outcomes from the event. Eric R Sinnaya, CEO of Kedah-based Morahols Travel, stated that his second attendance as a buyer yielded promising leads with inbound and outbound operators from India and Uzbekistan. He found the relaxed format conducive to building relationships beyond formal scheduled sessions. Melody Lee, inbound department manager at Jinghe International Travel Agency, noted the presence of high-quality buyers expressing strong interest in Free Independent Traveller (FIT) leisure travel and private tours to China. She secured bookings for late 2026 and early 2027 departures and established new business contacts, emphasising the importance of face-to-face meetings for building trust. Guohui Shi, an inbound travel specialist at China Prime DMC, observed a steady rise in Malaysian demand for travel to China following the Malaysia-China mutual visa exemption. He attended to reinforce relationships with Malaysian outbound agents and gain insights into Malaysian traveller preferences, enabling him to develop more suitable products for the market.
Quality of Outcomes Drives Future Strategy for Asia
MATTA’s long-term strategy for MATTA Connect focuses on the quality of business outcomes and partnerships generated, rather than solely on delegate numbers. President Nigel Wong articulated this focus, stating the goal is to forge stronger connections between international buyers and Malaysian tourism entities. This initiative specifically aims to promote local destinations, second-tier cities, and unique tourism products, thereby delivering greater economic benefits to communities throughout Malaysia. For the Asian travel industry, this event demonstrates a practical model for fostering B2B relationships and capitalising on intra-regional travel demand. The direct business leads reported, particularly with operators from India, Uzbekistan, and China, underscore the platform’s role in strengthening the Asian travel ecosystem. The focus on niche Malaysian destinations also shows a trend towards diversifying tourism offerings within Asia, moving beyond traditional hubs to support local economies, a pattern increasingly relevant across Southeast Asia’s developing travel markets.
