Myanmar Establishes Tourism Promotion Base in Kunming

Myanmar has officially opened a new tourism promotion office in Kunming, located in China's Yunnan Province. This development follows a high-level dialogue held in Kunming from 13 to 17 October this year, aimed at strengthening travel ties between the two nations.

U Maung Maung Kyaw, Permanent Secretary of Myanmar's Ministry of Culture, Hotels and Tourism, stated that the new office will serve as a vital link between government bodies and private sector tourism operators, fostering closer cooperation. The initiative seeks to deepen the existing friendship and bilateral collaboration through the travel sector.

Visa-on-Arrival Extended for Chinese Visitors

In a move to facilitate easier travel, Myanmar has prolonged the validity of its visa-on-arrival scheme for Chinese passport holders. This permit is now valid until 29 August 2027, as confirmed by Permanent Secretary U Maung Maung Kyaw.

The extension is expected to encourage a greater influx of Chinese tourists, providing them with a more straightforward entry process into Myanmar. This policy adjustment complements the broader strategy of enhancing accessibility and appeal for one of Asia's largest outbound travel markets.

Bilateral Agreements Target Organised Tours

The establishment of the Kunming office was formalised through a memorandum of understanding signed on 16 October this year. The agreement involved China-based companies and travel firms from Myanmar, with the objective of creating systematic tour arrangements for Chinese travellers.

During the high-level dialogue, the Permanent Secretary and his accompanying delegation also toured various cultural and tourism infrastructures, alongside model tourist destinations within Yunnan Province and Dali, gaining insights into regional tourism development. This direct engagement aims to streamline the process for Chinese tour operators.

Boosting Myanmar's Hospitality Sector

The direct access to the Chinese tourism market, enabled by the new Kunming office, is anticipated to bring significant economic advantages to Myanmar. Officials expect the initiative to support the safe return of international tourists and contribute to the recovery of the local hospitality sector.

Furthermore, the increased tourism activity is projected to generate new employment opportunities for the local population and enhance foreign currency earnings for the country. This strategic focus on the Chinese market represents a key component of Myanmar's post-pandemic tourism revitalisation efforts.
