Porto's Accommodation Scene Features Renovated Palaces, New Dining Concepts
Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, presents a diverse range of accommodation, from historic palaces to contemporary urban stays. Recent developments include significant renovations and new dining concepts across key properties, catering to varied traveller interests in culture, gastronomy, and city exploration.

Porto's Distinct Hotel Landscape
Porto, a city characterised by its rich history and architectural details, offers a varied hotel landscape across its main districts. On the Porto city side, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, visitors can find accommodation within walking distance of winding, cobblestoned streets such as Rua das Flores and the Ribeira District.
Across the Douro River, Vila Nova de Gaia, while a separate municipality, remains closely linked to Porto's port trading heritage. Hotels in Vila Nova de Gaia often provide sweeping views of Porto city proper from their elevated positions.
Both areas are recognised for their hospitality options, which frequently incorporate fine dining, private port tastings, and personalised spa treatments, reflecting the city's appeal to discerning travellers.
Palacete Severo: A Restored Architectural Statement
Among Porto's notable properties is Palacete Severo, a charming hotel situated on the city's granite streets. Architect Ricardo Severo built the palacete in 1904, incorporating diverse Portuguese stylistic elements into its design.
Today, the yellow-walled house has undergone a meticulous restoration by designer Paulo Lobo, now comprising 20 rooms within its main structure and an additional building across its garden.
The property features a spa offering plant-based Olivier Claire products, a swimming pool, a bistro located in a tiled courtyard, and a restaurant led by chef Tiago Bonito, who previously earned a Michelin star in Portugal, alongside sommelier Sara Godinho.
French owner Géraldine Banier’s Perspective Gallerie curates the modern art displayed throughout the hotel, complementing its 20th-century stained glass and stuccoed ceilings.
The Editory Boulevard Aliados: Urban Living and New Culinary Ventures
For those seeking a central Porto location, The Editory Boulevard Aliados provides direct access to the city's attractions. The hotel encompasses 60 rooms distributed across two buildings, fronting both the grand Avenida dos Aliados and Rua do Almada, known for its nightlife.
Local interior design studio Ding Dong designed the hotel's distinctive interiors, which include sunshine-yellow walls, mint-green ceilings, velvet scallop-edged headboards, and retro telephones. A new dining concept, Gio Party & Pasta, commenced operations in Spring 2026.
This venue features Italian classics, circus-themed murals by Portuguese artist Sofia Torres, and hosts performers and a DJ on Friday and Saturday evenings. Guests may also use the hotel's black stone-lined heated outdoor pool after a day of city exploration.
Infante Sagres: A Legacy Reimagined
Infante Sagres, established in 1951 by entrepreneur Delfim Ferreira, holds the distinction of being Porto's first five-star hotel. Its legacy continues following a modern restoration and refurbishment completed in 2024 by local firm Nano Design.
The renovation, partly inspired by Portuguese poet Luís Vaz de Camõe, preserved the hotel's original character accents, such as intricate wooden panelling and tilework, while introducing modern comforts. The hotel maintains dramatic design elements, including jewel-toned sofas in its three drawing rooms. New additions include an elevated courtyard with a plunge pool and sundeck.
Its 85 individually designed rooms are spacious for a city-centre hotel, many featuring bold murals that contrast with crisp white linen. These ongoing developments demonstrate a sustained investment in Porto's hospitality sector, broadening refined accommodation options for travellers seeking a blend of historical context and contemporary amenities within the city.
