New Income Threshold for D8 Visa

Portugal's D8 Digital Nomad Visa, introduced in October 2022, has established its income requirements for 2026, targeting remote workers and freelancers from outside the European Union and European Economic Area.

Applicants must show a minimum monthly income of €3,680, which the Portuguese government sets at four times the national minimum wage, currently €920 per month for 2026. This visa offers a pathway to legal residency for one year, renewable based on continued eligibility. The processing period for the D8 Visa typically ranges from 30 to 60 days.

Family Member Income Additions

The income threshold for the D8 Visa increases for main applicants wishing to include family members. For a spouse, an additional 50% of the base income is required, while each dependent child adds a 30% increase. This structured approach allows families to relocate together, provided the combined income criteria are met.

The visa initially grants a one-year residency permit, which can be extended as long as the financial and minimum stay conditions are fulfilled.

Residency and Pathway to Citizenship

Holders of the Portuguese D8 Visa are required to maintain full-time residency in Portugal, meaning they must reside in the country for at least 183 days per year to retain their visa status. Applicants must also provide proof of accommodation, such as a valid lease agreement or property title deed.

While the D8 is primarily a residency visa, individuals may become eligible for permanent residency after five years, and potentially citizenship, contingent on meeting the specific legal requirements and application dates under Portuguese nationality law.

Appeal to Asian Remote Professionals

For remote professionals across Asia seeking long-term residency options in Europe, Portugal's D8 Visa presents a clearly defined route.

While destinations like Thailand and Indonesia have attracted digital nomads with various visa types, Portugal's D8 offers a structured path to EU residency and potential citizenship, appealing to those seeking greater stability and access to the European market.

This programme may draw a segment of high-earning Asian remote workers who prioritise legal certainty and a pathway to permanent settlement over more informal arrangements found elsewhere.
