Qantas Launches Sydney-Las Vegas Direct Flights
Qantas will introduce direct flights between Sydney and Las Vegas from December 2026. This new route addresses the largest unserved market between Australia and the United States, operating three times weekly with a Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
New Trans-Pacific Connection Established
Qantas will commence direct services between Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) on December 29, 2026. The airline previously operated charter flights to Las Vegas, but this marks its first scheduled, regular service. This new route will operate three times weekly, utilising a Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Flights from Sydney will depart on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 9:00 PM, arriving in Las Vegas at 3:55 PM the same day after a 13-hour, 55-minute flight. The return journey from Las Vegas will depart at 8:20 PM, arriving in Sydney two days later at 6:35 AM, with a flight duration of 15 hours and 15 minutes. The initial season for this route will conclude on March 12, 2027, offering 33 round-trip services.
Addressing Unserved Market Demand
The introduction of this direct service responds to significant passenger demand. Booking data for the 12 months leading to May 2026 shows that 51,000 passengers travelled between Sydney and Las Vegas. Most of these travellers connected through other hubs, primarily Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
Las Vegas represented the largest unserved destination from Sydney within the United States. Qantas anticipates that the new non-stop flights will substantially increase traffic on this route. Projections suggest a growth of a third or more in passenger volume, building upon the existing point-to-point foundation.
The airline also aims to attract travellers from other Australian cities, including Melbourne and Brisbane, and from Auckland, New Zealand.
Operational Strategy and Market Dynamics
Qantas will deploy a 236-seat Boeing 787-9 for this route. The aircraft configuration includes 42 Business Class seats, 28 Premium Economy seats, and 166 Economy Class seats. The three-times-weekly frequency allows for efficient aircraft utilisation. For the first season, Qantas will offer 7,788 round-trip seats.
To meet its average United States load factor, the airline would need to fill 6,464 seats. The Sydney-Las Vegas market is characterised by a strong leisure focus, resulting in a lower average base fare per available mile compared to the Sydney-Los Angeles route. The slightly longer flight duration to Las Vegas also means higher operating costs for the airline.
Qantas North American Network Adjustments
This new Sydney-Las Vegas connection expands Qantas' presence in North America, marking its seventh United States destination and tenth overall North American route. However, the airline's total weekly departures from Australia to North America will see a reduction in January 2027.
Qantas will operate 51 weekly outbound services, a 9% decrease from the 56 services offered in January 2026. This adjustment follows the cessation of Melbourne-Honolulu flights in January 2026.
Additionally, Qantas has reduced departures from Sydney to Los Angeles, New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), and Vancouver International Airport (YVR), alongside fewer services from Melbourne to Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW).
The airline's current North American network includes Dallas, Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Vancouver.
