Williamsport Airport Loses Commercial Air Service
Southern Airways Express (SAE) ceased all commercial operations from Williamsport Regional Airport (IPT) in Pennsylvania. This suspension became effective on August 1, 2026. The airline attributed its decision to persistent outstanding payment issues. These problems involved the Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority. Williamsport Regional Airport now lacks any commercial air service. The carrier previously connected Williamsport with Washington Dulles International Airport. Under this agreement, the airport authority covered any shortfall. This meant paying the difference between the airline's operating costs and collected passenger ticket revenue each month. Issues first arose in February 2026. The airport authority then informed Southern Airways Express. Federal and state reimbursements were experiencing unusual delays. Consequently, invoices from the airline began to go unpaid. This initiated the payment dispute between the two entities.
Airline's Efforts to Resolve Dispute Unsuccessful
Southern Airways Express continued to operate scheduled flights for several months. This occurred despite the ongoing payment problems. The airline stated it made good-faith efforts to resolve the dispute. It worked closely with the Williamsport Municipal Airport Authority. SAE granted extensions, believing a resolution was imminent.
