Southwest Airlines Rewards Travellers for Digital Disconnect
The 'Enter Airplane Mode' initiative offers up to 10,500 Rapid Rewards points for showing unread phone notifications and completing a quiz, running until December 2026.

New Campaign Rewards Digital Downtime
Southwest Airlines has launched its "Enter Airplane Mode" campaign, an initiative designed to reward Rapid Rewards members for engaging in a brief digital disconnection. The programme offers participants the chance to earn up to 10,500 Rapid Rewards points by demonstrating a temporary break from constant phone notifications and completing a short quiz.
This campaign, which commenced on 5 October 2026, encourages travellers to embrace a "vacation" from their devices, aligning with a broader theme of mindful travel. It is structured into two distinct offers, each with its own point allocation and eligibility criteria, designed to engage members in a unique way.
Earning Points and Offer Deadlines
The primary component, termed "Notification Vacation", invites Rapid Rewards members to upload screenshots of their phone's home screens, showing the count of unread app notifications. Each qualifying unread notification earns one point, with a maximum award of 10,000 points. This offer is accessible via NotificationVacation.com and began on 5 October 2026, at 5 a.m.
Central time. It is scheduled to conclude swiftly on 12 October 2026, at 5 a.m. Central time, or earlier if the allocated point pool is depleted. Separately, a "Burnout Quiz" provides an additional 500 points upon completion, with its deadline set for 10 December 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Central time.
Point Allocation and Eligibility
Southwest has committed substantial point pools to these promotions. The "Notification Vacation" offer is backed by a total of 150 million Rapid Rewards points, with up to 21 million points expected to be available daily. While unused daily points carry over, the daily allocation can run out.
For the "Burnout Quiz," a distinct pool of 37 million points has been set aside, sufficient to award 74,000 participants.
Eligibility for both offers extends to Rapid Rewards members who are at least 18 years old and residents of the 50 United States or Washington, D.C. Each member is limited to one award per offer, and points are typically credited within seven days following verification, though they do not count towards elite status qualifications.
Connectivity Paradox and Asian Market Watch
This campaign presents an interesting paradox, as Southwest Airlines is simultaneously enhancing its inflight connectivity. The carrier is in the process of installing Starlink satellite internet across its fleet, with plans to equip over 300 aircraft by the end of 2026.
This upgrade promises free, high-speed Wi-Fi, which could enable passengers to remain more connected than ever, even during flights. While the "Enter Airplane Mode" campaign is geographically limited to United States residents, the strategic use of loyalty programmes to influence traveller behaviour is a common practice observed globally.
Asian airlines, including major players like Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, frequently innovate their loyalty offerings, suggesting that similar digitally-focused or behaviour-incentivising campaigns could be adopted in the Asian market to engage their extensive membership bases and differentiate their services.
