New Perks for Southwest Business Travellers

Southwest Airlines has introduced enhanced loyalty benefits for its Rapid Rewards Premier Business Credit Card holders in the United States. The card, which carries a US$149 annual fee, is designed to offer frequent flyers and small business owners tangible advantages when travelling with the carrier.

Key benefits include a complimentary first checked bag and priority boarding for the cardholder and up to eight additional passengers on the same reservation. Additionally, cardholders receive an annual bonus of 6,000 Rapid Rewards points, which, based on TPG's October 2026 valuations, covers approximately half of the card's yearly cost.

Earning and Redeeming Rapid Rewards Points

The Premier Business card enables members to accumulate Rapid Rewards points through various spending categories. Purchases made directly with Southwest Airlines earn three points per US dollar spent, while spending at gas stations and restaurants yields two points per US dollar on the first US$8,000 in combined annual expenditure.

All other eligible purchases accrue one point per US dollar. These points are exclusively redeemable for flights operated by Southwest Airlines, a co-branded card feature that ties rewards directly to the carrier's network. Award ticket pricing is linked to the cash value of the flight, with taxes and fees starting from US$5.60 each way.

Additional Travel Privileges

Beyond basic flight perks, the card also accelerates progress towards Southwest's elite status tiers and the Companion Pass. Cardholders earn 2,000 tier qualifying points for every US$5,000 spent annually, without a cap, aiding faster achievement of A-List or A-List Preferred status.

Each year, the card also provides a 10,000-point boost towards the 135,000 points required for the Companion Pass. Further benefits include a 15% discount code for one cash-paid flight annually (excluding Basic fares) and a 25% rebate on inflight drink and Wi-Fi purchases made with the card. The card also features no foreign transaction fees, making it suitable for international business travel.

Global Perspective on Co-Branded Travel Cards

While Southwest Airlines operates primarily within North America, its strategy of enhancing loyalty offerings through co-branded business credit cards could provide a benchmark for other carriers globally.

The balance of an annual fee against benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, and elite status acceleration is a model that Asian low-cost carriers, such as AirAsia or Cebu Pacific, and their financial partners, might examine.

Such an approach could inform the development of new premium loyalty products for business travellers in dynamic markets like Southeast Asia, potentially influencing offerings by regional financial institutions partnering with airlines by late 2027.
