Vietnam's Ta Xua Wins Asia's Leading Emerging Destination 2026 Award
The Son La province destination recorded 56,000 visitors and 54 billion VND in tourism revenue during the first half of 2026.

Ta Xua Recognised at World Travel Awards
Ta Xua, a destination in Vietnam's northwestern Son La province, has been named Asia's Leading Emerging Tourism Destination for 2026. This recognition was granted at the 2026 World Travel Awards (WTA) ceremony for Asia, Oceania and the Indian Ocean, which took place recently in the Maldives.
This marks the first time Ta Xua has secured a win in this specific category, granting it wider recognition on the regional tourism stage. The World Travel Awards also named Vietnam as Asia's Leading Destination for 2026, further highlighting the country's appeal to international travellers.
Competition and Destination Appeal
For the 2026 award, Ta Xua competed against other regional destinations including Koh Kood in Thailand, Melaka in Malaysia, Morioka in Japan, Sumba Island in Indonesia, and Taipei in Taiwan, China, as reported by the World Travel Awards. Vietnam had two nominees for the award, with Ninh Binh also on the shortlist.
Ta Xua, often called "the paradise of clouds", is a mountainous region with altitudes over 1,500 metres, drawing young travellers to its cloud formations and natural features. Specific attractions include the Dinosaur Spine, Windy Peak, Ta Xua grassland, and various forest trekking routes.
Tourism Performance and Cultural Offerings
The Ta Xua commune People’s Committee reported that the area welcomed approximately 56,000 visitors in the first half of 2026. These visits generated around 54 billion VND, equivalent to over 2 million USD, in tourism revenue for the period. This figure represents 46.7% of the commune’s annual target for visitors.
For the entire year 2026, Ta Xua aims to attract 120,000 visitors and achieve around 120 billion VND in tourism revenue. The destination also features the cultural heritage of the Mong ethnic group, with traditional crafts such as flax weaving, indigo dyeing, and beeswax batik available. Its ancient Shan Tuyet tea plantations also contribute to the local appeal.
Future Development and Industry Impact
With its growing popularity, the Ta Xua commune People’s Committee is focused on sustainable tourism development. This includes enhancing infrastructure, improving service standards, fostering partnerships with travel companies, and safeguarding its natural environment and local cultural identity.
The World Travel Award acknowledges Ta Xua's growth from a destination primarily known to domestic trekkers to one receiving broader regional attention. This recognition is expected to draw further international interest to Vietnam's diverse tourism offerings, following the country's broader win as Asia's Leading Destination for 2026.
